Things to bring to the orientation??

Hi, my orientation date is approaching, but I am not sure what to bring to the orientation. I know that we should bring clothes, blanket, toiletry supplies, and immunization rocord. Is there something important that I missed? Is there anything else that I should know for the orientation? Also does anyone know where I can find my university ID number?

Thanks for answering my questions!!!!

For your ID number, check your admissions results again; it’s probably there. You really don’t need anything for orientation other than what you’d need for an overnight plus maybe a notebook and a pen/pencil and your immunization record. Also make sure you bring a sleeping bag and pillow because the beds are just bare mattresses! I also brought my phone charger. That’s really all you’ll need.

Check out the orientation website…

[University of Maryland - New Student Orientation](http://orientation.umd.edu/freshmanoverview.html)

It has the following list. You will be doing a lot of walking and it will most likely be hot.

Freshmen students are strongly encouraged to pack the following items when they prepare for orientation; they will make your orientation, more comfortable and enjoyable. Please limit luggage to one small bag in addition to your bedding.

-Bedding or a sleeping bag (students will stay on beds in residence halls, but no sheets are provided by the Orientation Program).
-Comfortable, casual clothing, a bathing suit (if swimming at night) and walking shoes
-Pillow
-Overnight personal items (toiletries) and a towel
-Parking pass
-Completed immunization form
-Health Insurance Card (mandatory)
-Notebook and pen
-A back-up copy of your grades and transcripts
-Documents that you need for meeting with campus staff (these may be unofficial transcripts, AP scores, etc. These are not mandatory documents required by the university, rather supplemental documents that may assist in the advising and registration process.)
-Sunscreen
-A photo ID (passport, high school ID, driver’s license, etc)
-Personal spending money

Do we get to live in the halls where we will be living this fall or do we just get random ones?

It’s just a random one (most people don’t know where they’ll be living yet) but they usually use an air conditioned one, so that’s good news for you.
You don’t need your ID number, and the ID’s you get at orientation will have them on it.

You’ll be staying in Cumberland Hall, which is A/C. It is also one of the 3 dorms that house the Scholars program.

It seems like a no brainer, but the roommate you get at orientation won’t be your roommate in the fall. That being said, hope they don’t put you in a single (like they did for me) because it was really awkward haha.

^My roommate from orientation turned out to be 3 rooms down from me on my floor and in one of my classes each of the first 2 semesters! Obviously I’m a rare case, just thought I’d share lol. You may never see your orientation roommate again though. It’s not a big deal though, I actually even only saw my orientation roommate for a total of like 15 minutes at orientation, including time we spent in the room!

Thanks for all those useful information!!

Does anybody know if all the beds at umd are twin extra long ?

They are not extra long. When you move in for the fall and if you bring bed toppers, etc., extra long twin fitted sheets will make fitting the sheet over everything easier, but they are all regular length.

@GGW, I bought extra long sheets (and mattress bag and pad) for my dorm rooms at Maryland and they work fine with an added advantage. I am spending the summer in dorms at Cornell where the beds ARE extra long and I didn’t have to buy new bed sets :)

We are headed to orientation tomorrow. We are not really prepared with a backup copy of grades and transcripts. I might be able to print something out tonight. Is it really necessary???

^I didn’t bring any grades last year and was never asked for it.
