Things to do in Lincoln

Just an ongoing list of things to do in Lincoln...

1) Football...need I say more
1a) go to good football game sober (like for Texas this fall)
1b) go to a bad football game so drunk that you don't remember the first half
2) Berm seats at Hawks field for the baseball team (free with NCard)
3) Get tickets to see the volleyball team play in the Coliseum
4) Shopping at SouthPointe (I really grew to like Von Maur)
5) $2 movies at StarShip Movie Theatre (on 14th and Q across from Wendy's)
6) Jazz in June, free concerts on thursdays (I think) during the month of June
7) The Lincoln Childrens' Zoo
8) A Stars hockey game (lots of fun)
9) Go to Schmigs (aka Amigos...some people call it Schmigos - they're dumb) at 2:30 am on a thursday night, talk with Woody the security guard, he's really cool, and super nice, so long as you're nice to him.
10) Get deliverary from either the Pita Pit or Jimmy John's at 3am
11) The Grand Italian Buffet at Valentino's on 70th and Van Dorn
12) Ice Cream from the UNL Dairy Store on East Campus
13) Check out the Sheldon Art Gallery on campus
14) Sit by the Broyhill fountain in front of the Union and people watch
15) Go by Student Involvement on the second floor of the City Campus Union and get involved. They have a wall that is updated regularly with applications for tons of groups on campus.

more to come later

16) Get a burrito at 4:30am from D'Leon's either on West O, or 27th and Vine.
17) Tour the State Capitol Building
18) Sandwiches from BisonWitches.
19) The Red Fox on Wednesday nights for Kareoke on West O
20) Sign up to play in the patio basketball league during the summer hosted by The Bar (my favority bar in Lincoln).

21) Shark Water and the Kamikaze Club at Cliff's (they have over 50 varieties of Kamikaze's)- just across the street from the Lincoln Grand Theatre - they've had the same decorations up since New Year's Eve 1981...awesome. Any drink you get from there will put you on your ass, but the Shark water tastes like a freakin' Sweet Tart.
22) Go Sidetracks on Friday night before a home football game to spread the Husker love.
23) Barry's on Game Day, just down 9th Street from Memorial Stadium
24) Kiss your girlfriend or boyfriend or random hookup by the Columns between Memorial Stadium and the NU Coliseum...Campus legend has it that if a girl makes it through her time at the U, without getting kissed the Columns will crumble. By the by, the Columns surrounded the original perimeter of the University back in the 1800's and are still standing today.
25) Enjoy a pint of LunaSea ESB from Empyrean Ales (just won a Silver medal at the World Cup of Beers) with dinner at either Lazlo's or Fireworks (all three are owned by the same people)
26) Crinkle cut fries and honey mustard at Lazlo's - AWESOME
27) The National Roller Skating Museum at 47th + South Street.
28) Misty's either downtown or in the historic Havelock location at 63rd and Havelock in NE Lincoln. The "Pride of all Nebraska" (the marching band) plays in both locations Friday night before a home football game. Regardless, they have great steaks and awesome prime rib.

29) Watch for acts appearing at the Roccoco Theatre - easily the coolest place to see a show in Lincoln
30) Impress a date by getting dressed up and taking them to Barrymore's in the alley behind the Roccoco - serves up great martini's and was once part of the backstage area of the theatre. Easily the coolest bar in Lincoln.
31) Women's soccer matches for free, on campus, on the infield of the Ed Weir track.
32) Take either History of Rock, or History of Jazz for an easy and fun way to fulfill your Essential Studies Arts requirement (you'll come to find out the dreaded ES/IS designations that are part of the general education requirements for graduation).
33) Stick around to be a 5th year (super senior) so you can get into the "Wines, Vines and you" wine tasting class which is very popular and fills up extremely quick (usually has only been one section of the class a semester).
34) Stay up way into the night working on a homecoming lawn display. Homecoming - if you are Greek - is one of the best weeks of the year.
35)Pay attention to who is coming to campus: The last five to seven years has seen the likes of Bono, Ashley Judd and Lance Armstrong, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, and Mikhail Gorbachav. Mitch Hedburg, the comic (RIP) gave a free show that sold out, and Ben Kweller gave an amazing solo acoustic show (only $12). Morgan Spurlock came and gave a special screening of his movie "Supersize Me" for free too.
36) Flavored martinis at The Starlite Lounge - a 50's themed bar which will probably remind you of drinking in your grandma's basement or on the set of Happy Days.

I realize that a lot of these are alcohol based and all, and I apologize. When you do finally turn 21, often times you get in a rut going to the same bars over and over again, and it's important to occassionally remember that Lincoln has a lot of cool bars that are really different.

Still a great list though. I need to go through and figure out which one's I've done - not tonight though.

Okay so I've done

2,7,8,11,12,15,16,19,20,22,24,26,27,31,32,34,37,41,42,44,45(if by 'cohabitate' they mean shack),50,51,52,55,56,58,59,60,61,64,65,69,70 (hell, I was a reference for the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences when he was applying up for another position),71 (My 189H course was about Nebraska authors),72,73,79,84,87,88,89,92,93,95,96,99,100.

47 is not possible.

Too bad you didn't do #5. I look forward to that one.

No but I did start the facebook group about it at UNL. Was hoping it would lead to some interested candidates...no dice.

36) Watch former (and some very famous) football players cut the line going into the Brass Rail after a home football game. I've seen Scott Frost do this, as well as Tonui Fonoti. The line was at least 150 people long. The athletes always go to Rail (which was rated the best college bar by Playboy - even though it sucks).
37)Buy tickets to any and all fraternity or sorority food philanthropies: tickets are usually $3-5, and get you all the _____ you can eat (fill in the blank with: ice cream, pancakes, sub sandwhiches, chicken wings, nachos, tacos/burritos, hamburgers, sausage, french toast). The money goes to a good cause, and you get food. Usually are from 10pm - 2am on Thursday night; perfect after coming home from a party or the bars.

38) Disc Golf
39)Vote in an ASUN election or for Homecoming Royalty even if you aren't Greek (Greeks and students in the Honors Program are the only ones who seem to vote)

Spend the day at the pool at Stadium view apartments (I think they're called something like college park apartments now...they got sold to a different developer) even though you don't live there and know no one else who does. (although you'll likely always know someone who does)

41) Try to figure out where Harrison Beck went into hiding while skipping practice this past weekend.
