For my graduation present, I'm going to ask for season tickets/a subscription to something in New York. I looked into Carnegie Hall's subscriptions, since they have a nice variety of shows. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks

You might be better off getting the student subscription to Carnegie Hall than a season subscription. You're probably not going to have as much time to go out as you would like (even on the weekends), and getting a season subscription can be very expensive.

My other suggestion would be the Metropolitan Opera, but I think a season subscription there would be even more expensive than at Carnegie Hall.

Finally, if you're the arts type, a Columbia ID will get you free access to a lot of museums already, so you should take advantage of that as well.

Instead of getting season tickets to just one place, consider asking for the equivalent on an American Express giftcard (although not all places will take those, so maybe cash is more versatile) so that you can buy tickets to all sorts of shows (Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera, Broadway, etc).

Lastly, you can sign up for a weekly CUArts newsletter with listings for different types of movie screenings, shows, dance performances, plays, etc. The prices are usually meant for student budgets, and you can find some pretty interesting stuff. My friends and I found the newsletter very useful this year. Awhile ago, it had a deal with a bunch of Broadway shows so that you could get (relatively) cheap tickets for shows like Phantom of the Opera and Spamalot.

the Amato Opera is always a good time, despite it being practically in Chinatown. Very very small location - very good performances.
