Is it true that if u are a Columbia undergrad, u get to go to all these incredible shows for free???

No...I think there are a couple of outings during freshman year when they'll take you for free. Beyond that, you can use your student id for big discounts.

there are also raffle-style opportunities to go to bway shows and operas and other such events for free as part of Urban NY (for everyone) and SEAS NY (SEAS only)

i c

shraf...i didnt get the last one....explain plz....??

Yeah I'm most definitely sure thats the case. My High school is affiliated with Lincoln Center Theatre in manhatttan so we get to see shows like "Dessa Rose" && "NO Child" for Free.
I geuss its some kind of partnership that Broadway has with Columbia.

My d works in the college activities office (CAO) at Barnard, through which the Urban New York program is run. As I understand it, twice a year students at Columbia University (including Barnard and CC...I did not know about the SEAS program Denzera referenced) are offered the chance to sign up for free tickets to events all over NYC, including everything from Broadway shows to baseball games to opera, etc. In the fall, sign up is limited to first-years. It's open to all students in the spring and is first-come, first-served as to which events you actually get tickets to attend. The number of tickets to each event is limited, so you may or may not get what you wanted.

In addition to this, the CAO gets discounted tickets to various shows throughout the year....also discounted movie tickets.

I think it's less of an affiliation and more that CU buys the tickets and then lets students have them for free.

Urban NY includes CC, SEAS and Barnard...not only CC and Barnard

I am not Denzera

not true, it doesn't matter when you register there is a lottery type deal that is done behind the scenes that assigns the events according to your preferences and your randomly assigned lottery number....the chance of getting a ticket though, especially to the really popular events/shows is quite slim.

incorrect...it is as ses says, columbia buys the tickets and gives them out for free...at some events, like a knicks game i went to as part of Urban NY, you even get a food voucher with your free ticket....i'm sure they get group discounts though.

right, and in addition to Urban NY, SEAS runs a separate program called SEAS NY where additional tickets to stuff are handed out.

the ticket lotteries at most broadway shows are great ways to get in if you're a local. You go 2 hours before the show, put your name in, and if you get in - great! You pay $21 and get front-row seats more often than not. if not, you take the 15 minute train ride home. NBD. So that was a great suggestion.

Shraf, I am so sorry I misquoted you as Denzera. And thankyou for clarifying that Barnard, CC and SEAS are included in the Urban NY program...that is what I thought until I saw the quote about SEAS having its own.

I do know for a fact that there is a first-come, first-served element to the UNY program but now that I think about it, that is probably just for Barnard students. Those Barnard students that REALLY want certain shows do have the option of standing in line very early the day of the sign-up (there are actual physical lists involved for each event). I gather, though, that the sign-up for CC./SEAS students is handled online through the system you described. Sorry for the confusion.

are you positive it is still like that? i only ask because it used to be that way for cc/seas until a couple of years ago

Yes, my d is actually involved with the UNY program and has been in charge of the sign up process for the last two semesters...
