Thinking about Career

Thank you so much! I just am wondering what OU and NMS stand for. I appreciate your help! @GoldenRock

OU - University of Oklahoma
NMS - National Merit Scholar

Which grade are you now?

Thank you! Joining high school this September, so 8. @GoldenRock . I’m just preparing because I’ve had siblings going to college and I just want to be prepared.

If you are in 8th grade you have a lot of time to explore your interests. You are only 14. Talk to people in different career fields and take classes or enroll in programs over the summer that will allow you to explore different areas. Right now focus on transitioning to high school. You have four years ahead of you that should be your primary focus at this time.

Thanks! @raclut

In high school you will have the opportunity to take science and math classes which are the foundation for premed and engineering. You will have the option to take business electives to explore that area as well. Look at all the classes that are offered at your school and select electives that interest you. Look for clubs that explore some of the interests that you have. If you are interested in music or playing an instrument I am sure your high school will have opportunities to participate in those areas.

Thank you so much! I appreciate all your trips and will take them into consideration! @raclut

Do you know if your high school offers AP classes or the IB Diploma program? Participate in activities that you truly enjoy. Don’t be afraid to try new things too. That will be a nice break for you from the academics.
Try to balance schoolwork and fun. Enjoy the summer break between middle and high school.

Yes, my high school offers many AP classes (my sisters took them when she was in high school). Thank you so much for all your time and tips! I appreciate it! @raclut

@SDave03 I don’t know if you were aware but there is also a section on this site dedicated to high school life.

AP classes are good. You will be able to find books and tutoring for AP classes if needed. In 9th and 10th grade develop your study habits so that you have a strong foundation for 11th and 12th grade. If you don’t understand something in class don’t hesitate to meet with your teacher and ask for help.

<<<Not every interest you have has to be a major.<<

Or a minor!

Sometimes you can just take a class or two for interest. That way you can SKIP the harder ones that might hurt your GPA.

My son took several Spanish classes, but didn’t complete a minor because doing so would have required Spanish LIt of some sort, which would totally have trashed his GPA…lol

Thanks! True! @mom2collegekids
