I have a bit of a dilemma here, and wanted to seek the advice of the community here. I’m about to start a job writing javascript apps, and frankly I enjoy the s*** out of it. I like programming in general, and for about 3 months I was seriously considering getting my BS in that field. But then I got burnt out on school for a little while and just decided that I would learn everything myself and do code without a degree. Now, randomly, I have decided that I would like to design skyscrapers/ dams/ monuments and be able to marvel at my creations. I’ve done a ton of googling on what civil/structural engineering entails. I get pretty excited/stoked when I’m reading what it’s all about, but in reality I know absolutely nothing about it other than it sounds really cool. Does that make me insane for trying to do this CE degree? I still like computers a lot, and want to do this javascript job for the foreseeable future. And, troublingly, I still haven’t ruled out a bachelor’s in CS. Oh wise internet forum, show me the error of my ways and give me guidance!
There’s nothing wrong with trying to get a civil engineering degree. You can still take CS classes as your electives.
If you later decide that you want a CS job as a career, from what I heard most CS jobs don’t care about whether or not your degree is in CS. It’s all about whether or not you can pass the technical interview.
We hired one of our co-op kids (Mech Engineering) to write Android apps…
Keep in mind that there is a phenomenal amount of difference in difficulty between writing Javascript and structural or Civil Engineering. I’ve done degrees in both CS and Civil Engineering and while I was a “natural” coder getting out of college was a different story. Survey of Programming Languages vs. Plates & Shells?
