Thinking about Industrial Design?

I attended SCAD for five years, and I would like to give an honest review of the Industrial Design program.

Two words: Very Rigorous.

You will bleed, you will cry, but if you survive, you will be among the 1% of students graduating with the letters "FA" somewhere after their names who have a very optimistic outlook in the job market. I know a good percentage of students who already have jobs lined up, and every single graduating ID student has been, or currently is, part of very high-profile internships.

Honestly, I could not ask for anything more from a university. The faculty have been incredible. The pressure that they apply is completely necessary to push those students who will be capable of getting a job in the creative field (especially under this economy) to their very best, and making the other ones... second guess their career choice. The truth of the matter is, only the best are getting jobs right now. Those who do graduate from Industrial Design at SCAD are the ones getting jobs, and those who chose to leave have a much better shot at going to a state school and being an middle-grades education major.

I hear this: Well, what makes a good school is the ability to turn anyone into a [insert occupation]. False... in this instance. You can teach drawing, to a certain level. You can teach creativity, to a certain level. You can teach problem solving, to a certain level. But that level is NOT the level at which you will get hired in this economy. The SCAD Industrial Design program exists to push (push HARD) those select students who can compete among the best of the best, and make the rest seriously second guess their career choice.

If you want to be an industrial designer with all of your heart, and you believe in nothing else, I would highly suggest SCAD. If you have one ounce of doubt in your mind, you will die in the process.

The faculty are there to help, and very capable of it, but you need to go all-in.

“I’m in high school, and I attended SCAD summer camp, and I hated it. SCAD is a horrible school.”

I don’t want to hear this. If you have something beneficial to contribute to this thread, please do so, but please don’t contribute if the only experience you have is the 2-week high school summer camp.

I taught a few of the Summer Experience courses a number of years ago at SCAD. Based upon the final shows I attended, I saw a lot of wonderful and inspired work.

You should describe why it was horrible. That way people can make an assessment of your perspective, and decide if it applies to them or not.
