I am a rising senior. I took two SAT Subject Tests in Math Level 2 and US History, recieving a 800 and 770, respectively. None of the schools I am applying to require/recommend more than 2 Subject Tests. I am planning to major in Economics/Mathematics. If I take a third test, it will be in Chemistry in November. However, I am not particulary good at Chem, and if I do take it, it will probably require a lot of studying (especially during September and October), and as a result, my first semester grades might fall. Do you think it is worth taking a third Subject Test? Will taking a third test and doing ok (730-770) greatly increase my chances of admissions?

I also have a 2320 (800 M, 760 CR, 760 W) on my SATs, and a 5 in AP US History and a 4 in AP English Lang/Comp.

If you need to know, I am applying to the University of Chicago, Washington University in St. Louis, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, Carnegie Mellon University, Lehigh, NYU, Rutgers and Boston College.

Thanks for your help!

I don't think it's worth it unless you have even the faintest idea of applying to a school that requires three. Your scores are all great.

Given your previous scores, it would be redundant to take a third SAT subject test, unless of course, one of your schools require it.

I complete agree with Posts 2 and 3. You should do fine without the third test. I wonder if any one dissents....

Unless any of the schools you indicated -- OR the program to which you are applying -- requires both a math and science subject test you are good to go.

Only if you want to apply to Georgetown, Princeton or Harvard.

Wait, what? Studying for a subject test is going to bring down your grades for 2 months? How did you even survive taking two already?

You need a math and a science for CMU(if you are applying to econ or math), so if you don't have it i'd take chem.

^: OP already took math level ii.

I wouldn't bother. Firstly, because who wants to take a test if they don't have to. Secondly, don't risk a lower score, as if you get, let's say 600, colleges will see it along with your other two scores. They might not care, but it definitely won't help. Thirdly, a third sat subject test, even if great (750+), doesn't help that much, as you've already established you are a good student and have a good grasp of the content by getting such great scores on your other SAT IIs.

To openedskittles: Instead of doing schoolwork, I would be studying for Chemistry, and thus, time that would instead be allocated to schoolwork would be allocated to Chemistry and therefore, theoretically, my grades would not be as good as they could be.

That may be weird logic.

haha, I understand. but if any of the above doesn't request 3 don't bother.
I say focus on GPA =).
