Some of the schools I am applying to accept a maximum of two teacher letters of recommendation. I would like my current history teacher, who has worked closely with me in an EC in the past, to write a letter. If I submit his letter as a supplemental letter, will colleges be angry that I am technically submitting a letter from a third teacher? Thanks.
If they only accept a MAXIMUM of two recs then I wouldn’t submit the third rec. If they require two recs, but are willing to take another supplemental rec then I would submit the third rec. Did you already submit the other two recs? I don’t think that the college will be angry per se, but most likely they will only read and take into consideration the first two letters. You should double check with the college @hsgraduate2017 to make sure.
The sheer volume of applications makes the job of an adcom really stressful and overwhelming. Adding to the workload does not help your case.
If you are deferred in an ED round or are waitlisted, you are invited to submit additional, updates to your application. That would be a good time to have a great rec to send with other materials.
At this point, simply follow instructions.
However, if there are “optional” recs (for example Barnard requires 2 teacher recs but does allow 3), I see no harm in sending it.
It sounds like the OP is concerned that the 3rd letter is from a teacher specifically. Sounds like an optional other rec may be allowed but that it’s intended to be from a coach, community leader or other non-teacher that knows him well outside the classroom.
With that assumption, I think it would be ok since you are not asking him as a teacher but rather as the leader of the EC. Just be sure that is what he focuses on.
My daughter is sending a recommendation to the schools that will allow it from her theater arts teacher who has directed her in many plays in addition to the recommendation from her 2 core academic teachers.
Don’t send more than two academic teacher recommendations. You don’t want admissions officers to think that you can’t follow simple directions.
Well it turns out that all three teachers submitted their letters as teacher recommendations. The question now is whether I should reach out to the schools I’m applying to that only allow a maximum of two teacher recs. I could try to contact them and request that only two of them be counted as teacher recs. My main concern is that they’ll be angry I submitted three. So confusing…
