I was wondering what classes you took your freshman year and what professors you think would be the best for an upcoming freshman

you can pm me if you’d rather to answer my question

lol! hey! i got your PM, but ill answer on here because other people might be curious.

what is your major? do you know what kinds of classes you will be taking?

as of now, I can only really comment on pre-med (science) professors, since most of the classes i’ve taken have been math/science. if i can’t help you out, though, i can probably direct you to a student who can :)

thanks I’m fairly sure that I will major in Psychology and I want to double in Neuroscience but I don’t know if I can handle the courseload. Who would you recommend for my pre med req’s?

hmm…let’s see:

-for psych 101, alvarez is AWESOME
-for cell 101, you have to take dr. v. the class is tough, but she is really great.
-for ebio 101, you have to take fleury.he’s great and his class is much easier than dr. v’s.
-for chem 107, it really varies on who is teaching (it changes each year). i have kopelitz this semester and he is great. i had jacobsen last semester and while he is a nice guy and undoubtedly brilliant, he is not the best at teaching. most of the chem professors are pretty bad so its really just luck as to who will be teaching.
-for calc 1, i’ve heard amdebheran (spelling?) is great, although i had a grad student teach my class.

you also might take physics, and i’ve heard the professors are pretty bad for the most part, especially if you take non-calculus based. thus, i’d stick to calculus-based if you can take it. my friend has norton and she said he is okay. everyone seems to complain about tipler (who i think mostly teaches non-calc based).

i hope this helps, it might be easier to ask me once you are planning out your schedule and you know who is teaching what. let me know if you have any more questions!

Fleury’s class is a joke. If you have no desire to learn anything, I highly advise you to take it. All you have to do is memorize the terms three nights before the exam and spit them out on the exam. An easy A.

Dr. V’s class is excellent prep for med school. Kids whine about it all of the time but that’s just because they will never attend medical school. Not as difficult or meaningful as Mullin’s cell bio class, but def. something to consider.

Take Hebert over Alvarez.

Brent Koplitz is the only credited way to go for Chem. If you’re stuck with anyone else, drop it like the plague.

stewartudall…what is your opinion on taking 5 years to graduate rather than 4 before applying to medical school

Smile, you asked this same question on the Pre-med forum and the experts (doctors and students who have gained admission to med.school) there told you that a 5year plan to graduate is a HUGE red flag. If your son cant get all the EC’s you feel he will need in 4 years then the best plan is to graduate in 4yrs and take a gap year before applying to Medical School. The gap year is looked upon favorably by med schools as a time to gain meaningful experiences and mature. A 5 years plan to graduate from undergrad is sometimes a sign that the kid couldnt hack it. Your plan that your son take minimum hours to gain a good GPA while doing EC’s sounds good to the lay person when in reality, medical schools want to see your son take a full load and do EC’s etc. all while getting great grades. Med. school is hard and they want to know kids can hack the level of intensity.

As a parent of a Tulane freshman who wants to attend Medical school also, I too worry how she will fit it all in in four years. My kid also wants to study abroad for a semester Junior year. Dont know how she will do it but I have to realize SHE has to figure it out for herself. Sure, I make a suggestion sometimes, but in the end she must do it herself. Things will only get harder for her over the next 12 years or so if she stays with medicine. Things are going to get alot harder before they get any easier.

What is the average percentage of med school graduates that get accepted to one of their choices while matching?
