Help picking classes

I'm an incoming freshman who unfortunately could only sign up for the 4th orientation session by the time I got onto the system. This school really is crowded! I'm a biochem major under the school of L&S, intending to be pre-med.

So far, I know I need to take Chem 20A and English Comp 3. Chem 20A is taught by Scerri and Baugh this coming fall, so there really isn't much of a choice between good and bad professors there based on bruinwalk. I have a 5 in AP calc, so I'd be taking Math 32A. My only problem is that Rogawski sounds like the best professor, based on the reviews on bruinwalk, and his class is filling up quickly. The other only professors this term are Sheehan and Mess. Mess has horrible reviews and there's barely anything on Sheehan. I know I need to review first year calculus before I start, but how well would I do with Sheehan? Unless I should take another GE course and wait until winter quarter to take math 32A?

Speaking of GE, I'm thinking of doing four courses this quarter, so are there easy GE courses out there? I've heard of a few, but they're not being offered this quarter.

P.S. I know reviews on professors should be taken with a grain of salt, but when most of them are really good or really bad, that's definitely saying something about the professor.

D went to first session, I’m not sure they will allow you to take more than 13 units the first quarter. But it is a good idea to have a Plan B. Someone else can help with profs, D is doing the Chem 14 series and Math 3 for life sciences.

I can’t help as far as picking classes (I’m a Soc major, Public Affairs minor). But I want to say that the 13-15 unit cap they suggest is just that: a suggestion. If you show your counselor that you’ve put thought into it they’ll let you enroll in more. I wanted to graduate in 3 years and talked it over with my OC. Once she saw that I was not budging and had put a significant amount of thought into it she did not have a problem approving my 19 unit schedule (tech 21 if you count marching band) for my first quarter and I’ve taken 18-20 units every quarter since then. GL! But do remember, most people start off their first quarter with 3 classes for a reason. Relax, focus on your classes, and save some time for clubs or IM sports or something.

Oh, and when they say have back-ups… the mean back-ups. And try not to get too attached to your classes if you’re planning them weeks before you enroll. I love UCLA, but the enrollment system = stress city. I’ve rearranged my class schedule three times for Fall '09 already because of sections getting full/ courses filling up.

I realized the life science majors have different class tracks than I do because biochem is under physical sciences. I know that if I take 32A, I would have to take 32B and 33C just to fulfill the medical school requirement of one year of math. Who typically takes these classes, in terms of major and what year they’re in?

TrueBlue4Life, if I tried to take the max units every quarter and attend a summer session or two, that would put me in a good place to graduate in three years? For pre-meds out there, how favorably would that help me with medical school applications?

I’m looking at the other thread, the one asking about how many units the incoming freshman are taking, and most people are taking three classes plus a seminar. I’m worrying that I might drown in four classes, especially since I’m really lost when it comes to picking good GE courses.

Please, any L&S majors out there, advise me of any good (and hopefully easy) GE courses.

port/span m44, a&a 10, arch&ud 30, philos 7… cant recall any others.

bump

a&a 10 is 500+ students, are there any issues with that? And please, anybody with info about Rogawski and Sheehan? And how come I don’t see other freshmen taking English Comp 3? Did everyone else take AP lit or something?

Scerri is great.

People will drop Rogawski. Just keep coming to class. You’ll manage to get in.

You can try four and drop the fourth class by Week 4 without penalty.

You should take the Math 3 Series as well as the Chem 14 series if you’re going to be a pre-med.

So how would I sign up for 32A? Wait-list for Rogawski or go ahead and take Sheehan and then switch?

Unfortunately, I’m a biochem major and the chem 20/30 series and the Math 31 series is a requirement for the major. Does this mean pre-med biochem majors have to do more work then life science majors at UCLA?

Something I posted on the bar topic but didn’t get response: how do we sign up for Eng Comp 3 if they’re all ‘closed’? Do we get to choose which section we get?

And also, I’m debating whether to take a&a 10 or neurosci 10 along with chem 20a, math 32a, and eng comp 3. On one hand, a&a 10 sounds easy and perhaps an easy A, but I don’t know if I’d like a 500+ student class and sitting on my butt for 2 hours for a lecture. On the other hand, neurosci 10 is a science class and probably rote memorization to ace the class, which is more work on top of my other classes. Anybody who’s taken either class, please give me some insight?

By the way, is there a way to see if a class will be offered the following quarter? I hope if I choose one class for fall 2009, the other will still be offered winter 2010.

Can I ask you for the link where you can check out which classes are filling up. Im also session 104 and trying to figure out what classes I gotta grab.

I dont know what the hell Im doing. lulz.

I’m just looking at the schedule of classes…I panicked because all the upperclassmen got to sign up first and a wave of them signed up for the classes I was looking for. I thought biomedical ethics was an interesting class but it was full before the first orientation started, so I knew something was up.

Good luck, orientation buddy.
