I'm still working on my UChicago essay (or trying to... can't imagine a worse time for writer's block), and the deadline is in about 13 hours! I guess that would explain why I'm so bothered by the fact that someone I go to school with just told me that he has taken an essay posted on a blog he found randomly on the internet, and turned it in as a 5th prompt (his own) essay.

I mean, he's going to get caught for this right? UChicago runs some kind of scan of the internet to check for plagiarism? Who can confirm this? I'm thinking about writing an email to UChicago telling them about this... I wonder if that would make me seem like some bitter kid (because right now, I kind of am... haha) trying to sabotage someone else's app....

I think that the he is only hurting himself (I know, I sound like a cliched nun) by plagerising. If he really was passionate about UChicago, then he would have taken a day or two to work on his essay. I think ratting him out would be fine, but I think that the adcoms are going to know right away that he's a fraud from the rest of his application. However, if he were to get in on a plagerized essay, and take the spot of someone who REALLY put some effort into their essays (coughme*cough) there would be a serious ass-whooping in order.

Yes, but why would he get in on a plagiarized essay? Are you saying that UChicago doesn't check for plagiarism in application essays? No "turnitin.com?" Nothing?

I'd rather not count on blind faith that there will be justice....

I have no idea if they check for plagerism (I really don't think they would, especially since they have so many essays coming in through snail-mail).

That's true... oh dear.
Well, would it be too late if I decide to write my email IF he gets accepted? I mean, chances are, this kid won't get in, but if he does, I wouldn't be very content to let him stay....

Well, by doing that you might brighten somebody's day. Imagine getting rejected from a college and then getting a phone call or letter offering you a spot.
