This Is Us. Anyone watching?

It’s almost like The Masked Singer— you have to listen (watch) for clues to figure out what the secret is!

If Cassidy got pregnant that one night she wouldn’t be having morning sickness 9 months after Thanksgiving, she’d be delivering. She still may turn out to be Kevin’s fiancee, though.

I’m sad about Rebecca’s diagnosis and the prolonged disease progression. Remember at the opener, Kevin’s son was school age.

Good point about the timing.

I think Cassidy is the fiancé because he said he felt like family with Nicky and Cassidy.
Maybe Randall is upset with Kevin for interfering with Tess. Or maybe Kevin is mad at Randall for not telling them about Rebecca.
I have to admit that I don’t like “CrossFit Toby” either.
Loved Nicky tonight!!

@youdon’tsay, we also thought the voice behind the clown at the fast food restaurant was going to be a classmate of Tess’ and that it would go terribly wrong! So glad we weren’t right.

Definitely faked out about the purchase of the flowers and the purchase of the pie…the preview from last week led us to believe Rebecca would become disoriented and not be able to find her way home in tonight’s episode.

In the 9 month forward flash, were they in the cabin that the family went to when the kids were growing up? Somehow I was thinking that cabin wasn’t still in the family.

I love how real Beth is…and I did not notice Kate’s signature on the police report. Doesn’t bode well but to be apart enough to have taken back your maiden name in 9 months seems awfully quick, especially with a new baby.

It sure looks like the same cabin. Weren’t they all there in the first season because they were going to sell it? Wouldn’t surprise me if Kevin bought it back.

Did Kate even change her name when she got married? What is it? A name change didn’t register with me when she was signing the paper. I was focused on the date – 8/31/20. But I’m sure y’all are right.

CrossFit Toby doesn’t bug me too much, but I get it. Whenever one partner changes, it’s tough for the other one because they have to accommodate those changes – or don’t, which looks like what’s happening there. Before I had ds1, I started to lose some weight in order to help me get pg. After about 30 pounds, I did get pg. Before I had ds2, I stepped up the exercise, and after ds2 was born I started running. Dh was great about it. I did marathon training with a group every Saturday morning, including long runs of up to 21 miles leading up to the race. I had a really tight group of friends, men and women, as part of that training. We’d run together and then go out for breakfast. We spent a lot of time together. Thankfully, dh never felt threatened or jealous, or if he did he didn’t show it.

I loved watching Nicky process how Jack had shared this meaningful song with his children, just as he had shared it with Jack. It is making me cry again this morning as I type this. So meaningful for Nicky after he said earlier that Jack had erased him to find out that Jack hadn’t actually done that.

It’s not unusual for families to be torn apart dealing with an elderly parent. Maybe that’s what happened to Kevin and Randall.

It was nice to see that Nicky’s addition to the family Thanksgiving traditions caught on and continued well into the future.

Since it seemed that Kevin may have stayed in PA and not gone back to LA, it’s certainly possible that Cassidy is the pregnant one, but we could just be getting set up by the writers on that one.

First I have to say – so. many. commercials. But I guess they pack about an hour of show into those last 5 minutes or so that makes up for it. Never miss the last minutes of a TIU finale of any kind!

I was distracted by several questions. We’ve already established that the old Randall house was a good distance from Philly. Yet he had time to drive there and back during mid day Thanksgiving?. Also in both the current story line and particularly in the 40th birthday story line – how did Rebecca get to where she wandered to? The cops drive her back to the cabin which is supposed to be isolated in the woods but she was wandering around a city. Did she drive there? And in both situations, if Miguel knew about her memory issues why did he not seem concerned about her being gone so long in current story? And why did he let her out of the house alone in flash forward story?

Other than that  I liked the episode.
Other thoughts:

  • Kryptonite Lady as the name for the texter to Toby cracked me up.
  • I hope Kevin is not with that red headed woman from the bar (am I remembering that correctly?) that he went out with a couple of episodes ago.
  • That is the same cabin where we saw ghost Jack (in season 1 ?) I can’t remember the rest of the story about it.
  • Does the 40th birthday flash forward change the timeline of when they are in Kevin’s big house (in LA?) and he has a 10 ish year old son?
  • I still think they’re playing with us with Kate/Toby. But why did she have to tell him about the avocado?
  • I’m thinking the not speaking to Randall has to be about Rebecca - maybe he didn’t want her living in the woods with Kevin. The cops said something about her being from LA but then twice Kevin said she was “home” in the cabin. Or possibly about Kevin’s fiance?

That’s all until January…

Isn’t this the cabin where Kate & Toby were married? Seems like it must have already been in the family, but I’m not sure.

@“one+two” brings up something that really bugged me … the avocado.

When ds1 was in a home day care at six months old, the wonderful caregiver told dh and myself how as working parents you shouldn’t worry about missing firsts. She said that we’ll know when he’s about to take his first steps and that she’d be sure to tell us when “he’s getting so close.” This was a wink wink nod nod that if she ever did see that first step or heard that first word or whatever, she would never take that from us. We get to believe that we were there for all the firsts, whether it was true or not. I thought that was the most compassionate, beautiful thing to say to new parents worried about leaving their baby, and I always share that story to new parents in the hopes that they’ll be kinder to themselves and not stress. I’m going to tag mom-to-be @romanigypsyeyes here.

Anyway, I wish Kate had kept her big mouth shut. What did telling Toby accomplish except to ease her conscience and one-up him?

I didn’t understand why Kate told Toby that either. I knew she was going to just by how she seemed so tormented by it, and I kept yelling at the tv like I was watching a football game. 'NOOOO! JUST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!" LOL

I mean seriously, what difference does it make?

Real life

My husband had a heart attack when he was 47. Everything is fine now 12 years later, no more episodes thank god.

But the year following his heart attack was one of or the most challenging year of our marriage.

I am very glad that we had been married for 25 years, had an almost empty nest and had an unwavering determination that our marriage was going to be fine.

But if this had happened at the beginning of our marriage or the beginning of having children (which were also very challenging years) our determination might have been more tested.

My husband lost 60 pounds and was very determined in his fitness pursuits. I was very supportive and joined him in ways that I hadn’t before.

We also uprooted our lives and changed jobs for husband which included a relocation to a place I didn’t think I would ever move to.

Giving a little glimpse into real life after a young heart attack.

Agree with one+two, the entire Thanksgiving thing of everyone leaving the house when they hadn’t seen each other made no sense. Especially Rebecca going to a movie. And the traffic going up and down the turnpike on Thanksgiving would have made Randall’s trip impossible. I am still not clear on which scenes were Rebecca buying the dessert and which the flowers? And why would Miguel not seem the least bit concerned?

I also thought Kate should have kept quiet. What difference does it possible make if it is the second time he eats solids?

I loved the scene with Nicky realizing that Jack had not erased him completely. And the flashback of the two of them eating shrimp and carrying that on through the generations was wonderful.

And I liked the future snipit of Kate and Toby’s adult son Jack Damon carrying on the tradition of Thanksgiving shrimp.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in a house where deer hunting season was always going on over Thanksgiving weekend and lots of family members had multiple dinners to go to in a day, but people coming and going during the course of Thanksgiving didn’t seem odd to me.

@deb922 Yes! Love and rely on Vulture recaps. I think I’ve read for five years, many shows.

Because I have too much time on my hands, I replayed the episode. These are the messages that were on Toby’s phone:

“I’m trying to get past it, but it’s hard.”

“Don’t let her bring you down. Here for you.” (and I believe the person was a woman)

So I can see why Kate was so upset.

Rebecca bought the cake on Thanksgiving. She had on a different outfit than when she was in the grocery store and bought the flowers, which she got for Kate on her birthday. There was a “40th birthday” banner in the cabin, so we know it was the first birthday after this Thanksgiving.

My beef with that was that the siblings’ 40th birthday was going to be nine months later (what Randall said to Kevin). So that would make it late August, roughly. But when Rebecca got confused in the store and restaurant, she was wearing a trench coat - too warm for that time of year.

The 40th Birthday house did look like the Pearsons’ old cabin from previous seasons (including, I believe, the Thanksgiving episode in Season 1, when they all dressed up). But it could also have been a house in the Philadelphia or Pittsburgh suburbs, or even in one of the West LA canyons (although, yes, Rebecca was not dressed for September in California, and the places she was walking around did not look like they were walking distance from Laurel Canyon, and why was anyone letting her walk out alone anyway?).

The red flowers were for the 40th birthday party; the whipped cream cake was for current Thanksgiving.
