Yes, @mommdc , I did notice the Personalized coffee mug. I had never thought of going back and watching older shows, but got to notice interesting details watching it a second time.
It was good to watch the older show with new eyes. I had originally thought Kevin’s house was too rich and over the top display of his wealth from years of acting. Turns out it was actually sentimental.
I sort of feel like I need to go back and watch this entire season again - or the series! So.Many.Details!
Odd that we haven’t seen Nicky in a while.
I think that when Kevin pulls up at the glass house he looks older than 50. He’s a pretty handsome dude and that dude was handsome but pretty darn gray.
I almost couldn’t handle it when Jack was choking! So stressed out! He is the most ADORABLE baby! I LOVED the scene with the Star Wars characters - but Jack, don’t choke on one of those figures!
I also wonder if we haven’t seen the last of Kate’s boyfriend.
I’m so glad Randall is going to see a therapist.
And that scene of Randall and Beth and Batman…that couple!
I agree that Kevin looked significantly older when he pulled up to his house (still looked great, though).
There are so many blanks that remain to be filled in, and I am really looking forward to what’s to come. What happened to Miguel? Who did Kevin marry, and is the young man his son, stepson, or what. What happens to Deja, Tess & Annie? What’s the deal with Kate not being there at the end? How did Nicky come to be Rebecca’s caretaker? And how the heck did Beth grow that studio to be the amazing place it appears to be in the flash-forwards?
hmmmmm…
I thought that Jack juggled the mug, Kate insisted he stop, then the mug was dropped. I thought that he, in fact, might have actually dropped it accidentally but that did not matter to Kate as it was broken.
He juggled and all in front of Kate. She turned her back for a second when she thought he was putting it back in the cupboard and that’s when it dropped - or in other words, he dropped it. She wasn’t looking so he could tell the tale he wanted to tell.
I believe he dropped the mug on purpose just to break it, to hurt her, because how dare she ask him to use a different mug. He’s just that much of an a$$ to have intentionally dropped it just to make her upset.
I think Toby isn’t going to tell Kate about the choking incident, then she’ll find out from the doctor when he goes in for his next checkup and she’s going to be upset that Toby didn’t tell her. Toby’s going to say he didn’t tell her because Jack was fine after the incident but he knew she would have freaked out about it happening when she wasn’t there and that she would say that can’t trust Toby to be alone with Jack (when actually he did everything right and doctor even complimented him, but she won’t see it that way) So it’ll end up forming another rift between them.
I think we purposely don’t know whether Mark dropped it intentionally because the not knowing adds to Kate’s conflict of whether she can trust him. Even if I am willing to believe that he might have dropped it accidentally, I know that I can’t really know because i can’t ever trust what he says.
There was so much to love about this episode: Toby bonding with the baby and introducing Star Wars with sound effects, the siblings bonding at the cabin, the family rescue of Kate from her creepy boyfriend, the time capsule, Kevin helping Randall find something to bury, the taped message from Jack, Jack’s dream house going from sketch to build and the ending with the silver fox and the framed sketch hanging in the entry.
I know there are people who get frustrated by the little details the show gets wrong, but I love the details they get right. The song playing in this episode for the build of the new house is the song that played in the episode when the house burned down. It’s called “To Build a Home” by The Cinematic Orchestra (I wasn’t that observant… someone told me). The lyrics are fitting.
I’m starting to think the falling out between the siblings is a ruse - maybe I’m just hopeful. The phrasing Kevin used, “We’re not talking to him, remember?” seems more an expression of irritation or joking than of a major fallout. I’m also hopeful the photo in the time capsule is foreshadowing a Kevin and Sophie ending.
The preview shows Randall telling a therapist that the family would fall apart without him: I think he’s going to figure out that it is he who would fall apart without them, especially Kevin.
Pardon my senior moment; do we know for sure the “him” is Randall? Might it be Miguel? Just like when future Randall is taking to adult Tess, they talk about seeing “her” and we still don’t know who her is.
If I recall correctly (and I often don’t) Rebecca says something about Randall and Kevin says something like “we’re not speaking to him, remember.” Now I’m hoping it’s something minor like Randall decides he’s always with his sibs (this comes out in therapy) and he wants to celebrate his birthday with his wife and daughters. And Kevin’s not speaking is said lightly.
Of course it being This Is Us it could also be they say they’re not speaking to him and then there’s a knock on the door and it’s Randall and he says he couldn’t miss celebrating the Big 3’s birthday together and the music plays and they all hug and we flashback to their toddler birthday party where everyone is throwing cake at each other. Can I write for the show now?
TO BUILD A HOME LYRICS
There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust
This is a place where I don’t feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home
'Cause, I built a home
For you, For me
Until it disappeared
From me, From you
And now, it’s time to leave and turn to dust
Out in the garden where we planted the seeds
There is a tree as old as me
Branches were sewn by the color of green
Ground had arose and passed it’s knees
By the cracks of the skin I climbed to the top
I climbed the tree to see the world
When the gusts came around to blow me down
I held on as tightly as you held onto me
I held on as tightly as you held onto me
@jerseysouthmomchess I didnt give horrible Marc one second thought that dropping the mug was accidental. I plan on watching the episode again (and have already gone online to listen to the beautiful song twice). He saw Kate turn and he cruelly drop it. Remember, he left her on the side of the road earlier that night.
@abasket Love your recap and discussion here as well as Vulture.com and other online summaries. Best episode in a great season.
@kelsmom Yes, Kevin was aged a little too much. Did anyone call actor Perry King to tell him about the resemblance to Justin/Kevin? I sat up and yelled his name!
