I’ll throw in a speculation that the rift is caused by something that comes up in Randall’s therapy. Perhaps some strong boundary setting, or something where Randall feels he has to choose between his health and/or his wife and kids and the family of origin, and he does not choose the family of origin.
I agree that it’s likely something that comes up via therapy. I think it could be about exploring being a black man raised in a white family.
As long as we’re speculating, I would have to imagine that something with William goes back into play. I would guess we haven’t seen the last of him. What do we have? 2 more seasons after this one???
Interesting to think about the “side” characters and what role they will continue to play:
William
Nicky
Miguel (more than a side player, but…)
Kate’s neighbor
Madison
Sophie
Mark
Any of Kevin’s other female sidekicks
Who am I missing that could potentially still play into the plot?
Great thoughts @abasket ! You never know when the next twist is going to pop up to surprise us. And having all these side characters to throw into the mix, who knows which way the storyline will curve next.
We have 4 more episodes for the season and I hope some of our questions get resolved.
My neighbor is convinced that the married Veteran who lived near his Uncle Nicky (can’t remember her name!) is the mother of Kevin’s son.
@abasket: Beth’s mom, Randall’s aide/coworker, Deja and the other girls and her BF and his family!
Cassie.
I think we got an insight into the Kevin/Randall issue at the end of the show tonight. It makes sense.
^^definitely looks that way.
Agree. Randall is probably going to get very threatened by Kevin’s competence and relationship with their mom, and Kevin may begin to feel that Randall’s history of control and having been the “surrogate dad” in the family after the fire may have Kevin feeling this contributed to his past feelings of inadequacy and/or Randall having prevented Kevin from being more functional than he was in the family.
Before watching tonight’s episode, did anyone else see its title, “Clouds,” listed and immediately think Joni Mitchell (and maybe even picture that album cover)? So glad she figured into this episode. And CSNY! Her song “California” was also a theme when Rebecca was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment in a January episode.
The last few episodes have reminded me what a great show This Is Us can be.
I loved that Joni Mitchell/Graham Nash story. I never knew that1
I chuckled at the “OK, Boomer” comment
I knew the Joni Mitchell story, but still loved how they wove it and her music into last night’s episode.
I’m still singing that song in my head. They’re either really teasing us or Kevin’s baby’s mother is Madison. Last night she said how it was different with Kevin because he knew her better than her previous guys, or something like that. And Toby asking if she was going to be his sister-in-law. I really didn’t like her when they first introduced her but she’s gotten better.
I’ve enjoyed the past few episodes because they’re focusing more on the core family members even if in all their different ages/actors. I personally was tired of the Deja storyline.
I am in awe of how each week, especially this season, brings a great episode. I did not know the Our House story, and loved the montage at the end bringing glimpses of each family’s house set to the song. Especially Jack playing music through the ages (and with what looked like blind boys playing the part).
It seems like in the end that Kevin and Randall somehow come back together at Rebecca’s bedside for what last years’ finale suggested was a birthday celebration.
Randall’s therapy session was so well done and, along with his scene with Beth, really key to the coming blow-up with Kevin. Rebecca’s desire to have Kevin keep her laughing was very telling - each kid supports her in his/her own way.
I was SO glad Kevin didn’t let her skip the doctor appointment! It was making me nervous!!
Just watched. Not sure why I cried at the end, except that this has been an emotional week for my family. My dad is going into hospice, but he made it long enough to see my 43yo niece get married Friday. I kind of want to roll into a ball under the covers. This one hit home, even the relationship between Kevin and Randall and my own boys.
@jym626 Last month I fell into an Internet story about Joni Mitchell (and I don’t know/listen to her music). It highlighted Laurel Canyon, the house, Crosby, Nash and I wish I could remember the online link?! So interesting the number of musicians there in the late 60s, The Monkees, Jim Morrison and more.
A movie I love and have seen a number of times, Laurel Canyon with Frances McDormand and Christian Bale takes place there, good music.
Love Kevin’s joke about TMZ catching them at the house.
Kudos to casting the therapist, DH recognized her voice before I did! Wow, Sterling’s performance was amazing.
