@jym626, while you can catch up with the Vulture recap, I recommend pulling this episode up on demand or streaming it on the internet. It’s worth your time.
Powerful episode. Maybe now Deja gets to be a child instead of mothering her own mother which she’s done since her greatgrandmother died.
This episode just killed me. I have tried to help a too young mom for years. She also went to jail and the kids to foster care. The girl also said she was tired of taking care of her mom and siblings. I tried to get them but I’m in a different state and ultimately not in their best interest. I pray their foster home is more like Randall and Beth.
This episode was probably even more glossed over than the reality of foster care and what these kids endure with their parents.
Amazing and powerful. The realities of the foster care system with Linda trying to help but no good options, with Raven wanting to have a somewhat safe bed even if she is being beaten, and the mom unable to get her life together. Not sure the mom leaving without saying goodbye was realistic or good for Deja. Agree with eyemamom that the reality of foster care is even more difficult, but glad the episode focused on this important issue.
There were flashes of two boys multiple times in this episode, am guessing they’re Jack and his brother (?). Good setup for the next season if so.
I just rewatched it uninterrupted. So good. I love how it illustrates how we are more alike than different.
I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Deja’s mom…I have a feeling that she and her mom will end up in Randall and Beth’s (love that R&B Properties) apartment building.
Next week’s the big wedding – I’m ready!
“What would I do without you?” Wow, that hit hard after hearing it from Deja’s mom a few times!
@LoveTheBard, that is a great prediction about Deja’s mom. Bravo!
“Was interesting to me how they started with the birth of the Big 3 and Deja and how much influence the accident of birth has on a person’s life. Path of Kate and Kevin’s lives were different at birth from the others based on the family into which they were born. Randall’s life could have been much like Deja’s had he not been adopted by Jack and Rebecca. Deja’s life would have been much different if she had been birth to parents like Jack and Rebecca or adopted. You understand the challenges kids face growing up with less than ideal parents but still difficult to image some of the things we saw last night.”
BINGO. Fantastic episode though tore me apart.
FYI - Sterling K. Brown is hosting SNL tonight.
^ Can’t wait!!
Overall I think the show is well written and beautifully executed. I found the latest episode to be very good. The acting from the 2 girls (Raven & Deja) was so natural - and as expected, I was on the brink of tears a couple of times.
The last few episodes feel like This Is Us is trying to corner the market on Emmy writing nominations. Each episode is fairly self-contained, and has a very “writerly” structure. Stuff like framing the episode with the purchase of the car you see at critical moments throughout the episode (but without the car itself having independent importance), or having every parent-child combination reading “Goodnight Moon” together.
I also loved the joke from SKB’s monologue Saturday night: “You probably know me from a show called This Is Us. It’s the saddest thing you can watch on TV, besides the news.”
^^ He was SO excited to be on SNL - and it showed in his response in all the skits!
Ohhh!!! Just when you thought Jack couldn’t be any better looking…
Definitely will need to watch that one again. Way too much I missed.
I watched it with closed captioning, which seemed to help. Great episode. I loved when Randall and Kevin played the"worst case scenario" game. I loved their speeches at the wedding. Seeing those flashes of the future guaranteed I’ll be back.
What was she holding in her bouquet?
I am not liking where this is going.
I had to decide between attending a wedding or a double header episode and graduation on the Fosters. Fosters won out because we’ve been watching for 5 years, and well they ended up showing graduations into the future for all the kids, but I missed the wedding. Looking forward to attending the wedding soon.
