bring it in somehow to increase your chances of admission. Say something in your why duke essay like "one of the many reasons i decided duke was the best fit for me was (say something about how close you are to your uncle) and then (by the way, he donated a million dollars) Say it subtly, but be sure to get the message across.

That might make some sense except that DR's example is hilariously unsubtle. If you must bring it up, mention that your great uncle is an enthusiastic supporter of Duke Law and has repeatedly recommended that you look into the school. (You might have to actually talk to him and ask him for recommendations for this to be true.)

In any case, great-uncle is almost certainly too distant, and Duke Law not particularly related.

The only way it would work is if your great uncle picks up the phone and supports your application by putting in a good word to admissions (or a letter of sorts, but if he's a big deal, a phone call should work). If he is such a big donor, they will be able to recognize his name and see that he means business. Otherwise this approach doesn't work. For example, Joe/Jane Gates could be some random loser claiming to be related to Bill and Melinda. Admissions won't buy it without Bill's word.
