well tough life.
i'd rather go to a school where people do different stuff very well, not just study and protect the "academic integrity." I don't want every school to be like MIT or Caltech.

then don't go to an "elite" school. I'm just saying that schools that claim to be of and accept students of world-class academic caliber should not, on principle, admit those who fall short. Not to mention, you're oversimplifying the issue by saying that every school will end up like MIT or Caltech (which are two completely different environments anyway) if they don't accept a few all-star athletes who aren't academically successful. You haven't drawn the link - how is having a couple of all-star athletes who aren't as smart crucial to creating a fun social environment?

CityKnight I played football too... actually was pretty damn good until I hurt my back. I know what a team sport is... and when you are one of the best CC/Track Teams in the state it is a team sport. We pace each other, we score points based on our relative positions, we develop race plans, and most of all the comradery that comes with the pain you endure with your fellow runners. Do not belittle a sport just because you don't have enough experience with it.

The jock vibe is felt in sports other than the ones you particularly participate in.

From that post I can obviously tell your the type of person that has no respect for someone who doesn't play one of the good ole american sports: Basketball or Football.

This is not a thread about why I got deferred either. And although the sting has somewhat faded, I'd rather not be told why I didn't get in.

You don't think schools like Duke, Amherst, and JHU are elite schools? They have athletes who are a bit underqualified (numberwise, if that's what you judge people on) but who contribute to the college community as much as other academic people do. Oh, well. if they're not elite schools, then I'm not going to one.

Oh, and LadyinRed, if you don't know the connection between having super good sports teams and fun, then you're missing out. My school's basketball team went to California State finals, and it brought the whole school community together. And for school size of 700, every game was filled with around 3000 people--parents, students, alumni, teachers, and people who didn't even go to our school.

And have you heard of Cameron Crazies? they have so much fun tenting out and cheering at games with friends. And I'm sure JHU has big community support for its super-talented lacrosse team.
Sure, you can have fun without great sports teams, but that'd take away one important part of social life.

hello123, its their school they do what they want. If the dean doesnt like you, ur out. It may not happen on paper, but any college can reject u on the grounds of slander of their college on this forum.

Now, they want him, they get him. They are happy, he is happy. Its a bilateral agreement and no one else matters. Its a win-win for em and thats it - QED

This is slander really. You are undermining hi9s acceptance and that is right. Just cause he got it and u got eferred, that doesnt make JHU evil and the tennis player (sorry, I dont know who you are) undeserving. As he got in, he seems deserving enough

Btw, congrats on ur ED mr. tennis player. Hope that u have a gr8 career :)

Antarius... hello123 isn't even the one who started this post. Your message should be directed to astrife.

This post is really dumb if you think about it. It's entirely subjective and has become relatively hostile.

We're all interested in these schools. It sucks that the process isn't always fair, and that's a comman occurence at every school, including MIT, Stanford, and all the Ivies.

How about we conclude it?

Maybe he seemed like a much more realistic person. I mean, why do you have to use complex diction everywhere you go. Are you trying to impress us? Deplorable, irked, preface? You sound like the most annoying person alive. I know that might be how you talk, but it is annoying as hell and makes you look extremely fake.
[/quote]

So what? You think he's annoying for writing like an intelligent human being? How typically 16.

You should hear some of the words my friends and I are prone to using in conversation.

I agree this thread has gotten a little nasty.

Nonetheless, just because the process isn't "fair" doesn't mean we still can't ***** about it. That's all I was really doing. Maybe that AdmissionDaniel guy will see this post and it will inspire him to rethink admitting some subpar athlete over a more academically geared individual.

Let me get your guys opinion on this though... With standardized tests scores like that though are they not expecting this kid to be in the bottom of his class maybe even be on academic probation once or twice? I mean even for someone who got a 30 or something on their ACT JHU is a tough school... Seems to me like they are setting this person up for failure...

Good point astrife. There are chances that he/she won't do well at Hopkins.

But have you ever heard of the placebo effect? I'm prone to think that it holds true. When great expectations are placed upon us, we tend to live up to them.

I'll end again by saying we should conclude this. B*tching is a good way to vent, but it won't have any persuasive influence on admissions representatives. In fact it's not a very effective method for persuasion period.

There's a likelihood that AdmissionsDaniel didn't even open this thread because of its title.

sorry hello123... my mistake

yes. and im sure he didnt open the thread. If he did, it could lead to a one step rejection for the OP

Honestly, how would the admissions office find out who the person actually is that started this thread? It isn't like he is using his actual name. I'm sure cc is also not allowed to give out personal information about any of its members.

Lol... good thing I don't want to go to JHU anymore... nothing against the school though

There is a big difference between Swarthmore and University of Chicago and other top schools that want a more diverse student body. The Ivies want to accept people that will bring them money and prestiege, they couldn't justify letting Bush in for his academics, they let him in because they thought if he attended the school he could garner attention.

Antarius is right. Schools accept who they want to accept, and no matter what our opinions may be, well, we gotta deal with it. It's just that I have no problem with it and some people do. I think athletes contribute to the community as much as any other students.

And if you have anything against athletes, it's not just athletes who get the break. It's the legacy, affirmative action candidates, students with low income, students from sparsely populated area (i.e. Wyoming), etc. Or even, you could say that students who write well get breaks (good essays). That's why the process is called holistic. It's not just the numbers. And I'm all for it. Although I've been deferred at my first choice school and that school took another guy who had lower stats but probably something else extra, I'm not bitter. I'm probably not right for that school or vice versa. If you want number-driven college admissions, go to Korea (where I'm from) and you'll see how crazy it gets. All my friends are doing right now is studying for tests.

And no, Admission Daniel won't rethink admission policy because of this thread.

football player..........25 act 1220 m/r 1740 total ...no SAT II's.... 3.5 uw, captain football team........ i told him to send his stuff to JHU..thats y hes going.......is it fair, no, is he really even that smart, NOPE.......is he really that passionate about school...NOPE, will he do a tremendous amount in his life........NOPE, but thats the system.....we after all sent them OUR apps ...ball's in their court....we must just all obey, we're the pawns for now

"If you want number-driven college admissions, go to Korea (where I'm from) and you'll see how crazy it gets. All my friends are doing right now is studying for tests."

Yep. Im from India where the thing is IIT. People study for 4 years to get in and like 2000 people get it outTA 2 LAKH (2,00,000) people. Its crazy. All that matters is that one stupid exam. I have a cold? - my bad luck

Coming back to topic, its simple. I believe that just because someone isnt that smart, ehy should he be deprived? His SAT is well made up by his sport skills and they will flourish in a place like JHU which has excellent facilities.

I believe that the whoever complains about their admission process for athletes should withdraw their apps.. as they prolly wont be able to accept a star athlete in their midst even if they do eventually goto JHU

and KG974, a 3.5 UW is well above average and is a rather good score. a 1740 SAT isnt the end of the world. I know people who due to unforseen circumstances got less than that and two of them I can safely say had IQ's around Genius level. ".ball's in their court." exactly... and the athletes are the ones who can put the ball there and actually score a winner!

"will he do a tremendous amount in his life........NOPE"
I don't know where you got this from. SAT scores or GPA's don't determine what a person's gonna make out of his/her life. Most NFL/NBA players didn't have great GPA's but have great influence and make lots of $$. George Bush didn't have great SAT, but he's our prez. Of course SAT's and GPA's indiciate, to a certain extent, a person's motivation, but who are we to judge who "will do a tremendous amount in his life? (w/e that means...)"

hello123......the kid im talking about is my best friend......the reality is.....he doesnt have PASSION for anything outside of football, he was going to go to Indianna University in Pennslyvania.....i told him that that would be rediculously dumb to do, so he chose hopkins over case and rochester.......passion is what takes you places.....and he doesnt have any....im not being condescending or an elitist.......its just an objective opinion........ im just stating how an elite Educational institution w/ DIII football shouldnt be accepting kids w/ no real academic passions or desires.....once again, just an opinion

well, they want to improve their football, they need players. So even if he isnt good enough academically...

"You find a need and fill it" - robots (big point in thAT movie)
So, JHU wanted him, and he wanted to go there...he found his need and filled it....

this is the point when we say QED and end the converstation
