Today I had my first final exam. It was very easy but a question in it was really confusing and most of us - including me - got the wrong answer.

Iam ranked first in my class, and the boy ranked second always cheats, my school sucks so almost everyone does that, but I don't cuz I just know it's unethical.

Now the guy who is ranked 2nd cheated and got this question correctly, And he admitted to me that he did that. I and him are not really enemies, we compete but we respect each others and we treat each others as classmates who have a good realtionship between them.

This question will have a big effect on the GPA.
Now after he cheated and got it right, iam really afraid that he will be ranked 1st and I will be 2nd, which will affect my top choice college application.

What should I do ?? I don't have any evidence that he cheated except for his words, and he'll probablly deny them and claim that he never said them.
Should I just forget about it and whatever will be will be ?? Or what ??

And Yes, one question that worths 5 points will make me loose my ranking, because the difference between my marks and his is only 4 points (( we don’t use a GPA out of 4.0 over here )) , so loosing these 5 points and him gaing them will make my rank seconed SUPPOSING that both of us ended up with the same marks in the other finals, which will probablly happen.

I agree that you should try to expose his cheating.
My only question is why will being ranked one spot lower (especially when that’s 2nd) affect where you get into college?

^^ My top choice college really cares about ranking, and I have a weakness point at a part of my application so I thought maybe being ranked first will cover up , even if a bit only.

I’m not sure of the exact admissions standards of Cornell Qatar, but I do know for top schools that one rank difference is negligible in the context of your whole application. Several ranks may be an issue, but one rank is negligible especially when you’re already in the top.

We have a different system over here , We HAVE a ranking for first trimester, Second , and third. And the councler includes the first trimester’s ranking in the LOR.

The valedictorian is announced after the second trimester end , So still long time for that.

I can’t believe what you’re saying !!
So if everyone jumped of a bridge I should do it just because everyone did it, yeah ??
I will not cheat , this is for sure.

And why should I work even harder ?? Iam already working hard , so just because a bunch of cheaters I should work harder and they should not , yeah ?? And they will just get away without any punishment, yeah ??
I have no problem in working harder, I already do. But I do have a problem with people coming and taking what should be mine without haveing any right to take it. This is just like stealing, so you think we shouldn’t punish stealers, yeah ??

I just can’t believe how some people think.

If I had a shot at valedictorian or salutatorian, I would definitely expose him. If he truly “respects” your aforementioned competition, there should be absolutely no need for subversion in any form.

Naive as can be, I actually believed that more users of CC would care about cheating. Assuming academics were held to high standards, I extrapolated the same to their moral compass. You’ll find a plethora of jaded responses on CC. Personally, I’d like to think it’s the nature of fierce academic competition and the stress resulting from it.

Congratulations on taking a uncommon stance on a common issue.

I don’t know. There’s a significant chance he won’t get in trouble, if you do expose him, and regardless of if he is caught or not, everyone or almost everyone will criticize you for “snitching” just to get the number 1 spot. And all that criticism will take away the prestige and honor of being valedictorian. I know it’s not right, but you must keep that in mind.

That’s exactly why I never said anything about this before to any of the teachers, I don’t want to be the guy who is hated by everyone and who is isolated from everybody, this would be terriable.
But i’ve always wanted to be the valedictorian, I even prepared my speech since Junior year. And now I have the choice to become hated among almost everybody OR just give up my dream.
My only hope is that I face an exam in which I can make up for the 6 marks difference between me and that guy, which would be a bit challenging but let’s see how things go.
