Those at Columbia, what were your stats?

10 char ..

Did you not see this at the top of this board?

It's always amusing when people think they warrant a special thread for themselves.

Maybe he wants to know the stats of current students.

Then he should search for the Official ED thread. Or the 2010 threads. Or the 2009 ones. Or the numerous other threads.

I'm not sure why this deserves a thread.

Maybe he wanted to know your stats!

yeah, I think that is what he meant. The stats of people like CO2, Denzera, CO7.....But thats kind of rude to ask : )

But not as rude as.....

Yo Tommy, what did you get on that calc test?
I gotta a 86..... I was pretty happy about it.
O cool, nice job. I gotta 100!!!!! (now praise me to no end....)

He wanted you to say something along the lines of,

"As a matter of fact, I went to Columbia, my stats are..."

why would his stats matter? c02 was admitted...what? 10 years ago? by no means am i saying he is less qualified than anyone applying now but the applicant pool has definitely changed and i have to believe that things now are different than even like 5 years ago. (once again, by change i dont mean became smarter, i mean just shifted.)

c02's advice is the best of anyone. search the forum and find the threads for past years. those are the people at columbia now anyways.

Maybe he wants to know final GPAs, LSAT, MCAT, GRE, GMAT, etc. I mean, it's a valuable thing to know I guess.

i would say most ppl at columbia have decent stats

I would say hovering around the 1350-1450 SAT or 2000-2100 NEW SAT for average Columbians. SAT II would be close to 750 each.

High school GPA? 3.6+

Great, I'm an old geezer now? That's the harsh part, not the part that I got in when it was probably easier. ;)

Seriously, I don't think it's that much different than it was 5 years ago. Whether it's 8.9% vs. 13%, we're talking about a situation where numbers and great ECs alone don't even get you close to admission. And, since numbers aren't really a huge deal with Columbia, it becomes a function of them looking really closely at the intangibles rather than your traditional "stats."

I'm pretty sure that it's harder now than 5 years ago. It just gets more and more competitive and I even read an article by I think a Penn adcom who said that "we have to reject many qualified applicant who we would have admitted 5 years ago."

i disagree. i think 5-10 years ago the applicant pool was much more self-selective than it is today. i really believe the only reason acceptance rates have dropped so much lately is that people who truly are not qualified start applying to schools they shouldnt be

I disagree. The marketing and the recruiting efforts and the hype about "elite" universities in the whole world has caused more competition. The average CU kid from 1997 did not have such impressive stats and ECs compared today's kids, even if you consider SAT and grade inflation. I'm not saying that the kids who get admitted are smarter or better, just that they look better on paper. I bet the number of students who take SAT prep classes and private college counseling has increased immensely in the last decade. This will produce better results and hence the kids look more competitive nowadays. It is true that a lot of "unqualified" ppl apply to top schools now, but this does not change the fact that the average CU admitted student is probably stronger on paper than the ones from the nineties.

what do you base this on?

Before you go calling others out for empirical evidence, it usually is nice to provide some of your own.

i'm using the fact that him proving himself right will prove me wrong.

Personal experience and it's very likely true. But no, I don't have hard evidence.

"The average CU kid from 1997 did not have such impressive stats and ECs compared today's kids, even if you consider SAT and grade inflation. "

This is obvious, as technology increased, as well as the baby boom, difficulty in being accepted into top notch universities has in fact increased.

Things change over time and its perfectly fair to say that admissions has become harder over a period of 5 yrs. Stats have shown it. Wanna call Columbia AdCom and ask, call the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 212-854-2522. & Ask for Ms. Marinaccio.

I could find some evidence that would show a rise in the SAT scores of admitted students. But then I'd have to figure out the SAT inflation rate as well, which is too much work for a lazy person like me, ^^. I don't need to convince you since I know that it's very probably true. Believe what you want, at least I do, :D.
