How did your scores on the 2 tests correlate? I am curious as to whether most who ger, say a 1000 on the SAT score Plus, Minus a small percent. Thank you.

I got a 1430 on the SAT (690M, 740V).

I got a 1540 on the GRE (800M, 740V).

molliebatmit,

Boo. My verbal went down.

So did my math.

Sad.

During the month and a half before the test, I was working in my lab for the summer, and in particular, I was running mice through a maze. It was work that had to be done, but it's a little boring for me -- put mouse in maze, wait two minutes, take mouse out, put next mouse in maze... etc.

I got a lot of GRE studying done while those mice were running the maze. All twenty of us got smarter that month. ;)

Hahah,

I didn't really study well for the test. Nor did I have a good time taking it. Long story about getting lost in Tokyo, forgetting to put on deodorant, and waking up late.

Ugh.

I think if I retake it, I'll score better, but why bother when you're in the program you wanted anyway?

But still...mice are kinda cute.

Better than what my girlfriend does with mice. She works in a muscular dystrophy lab at UCLA. At a certain age, they pick them up, cut off their heads, skin them from...neck stump to toe (that's my girlfriend's job) and then do something with the muscles.

My girlfriend is the type that can't even smash a cricket if it's in her house. This was very disturbing for her.

Thank you for reinforcing why I didn't go into science.

i got a lower score in math because i haven't done anything beyond multiplication and addition for the past 3 years -- some of my algebra got dusty, so it took me longer to think about it and i ran out of time, pity (730 GRE, 800 SAT)

my verbal went up significantly, but english was not my first language which probably affected by SAT more than GRE -- i actually memorized a whole lot of words for GRE and now i get the pleasure or seeing them here or there :) (700 GRE, 590 SAT)

I'm never taking the GRE in Tokyo again.

Haha.

That has to be it. Location. Yep.

For the record, I got an 810 SAT (1988, didn't study at all), 1100 (Q + V GRE , 1993), minimal studying and am going to take the GRE's again this year (studying my butt off).

1080 SAT in 1999 (don't remember the break-down...didn't study)

1120 SAT in 1999 (530V; 590M...this was after a Sylvan Learning Center Test prep course)

1190 GRE in 2003 (540V; 650Q; 5.0A...minimal prep, mainly focused on verbal)

So...I rose my score considerably between the two...still not great, but I've never been much of one to buy into the standardized testing concept. Edit: plus I got into my #1 PhD choice despite my score.

SAT (1999) 700M 700V
GRE (2003) 750M 600V
GRE (2005) 750M 750V

its interesting because i'm definitely not a math person!

isn't the math pathetically easy tho?

Sometimes it's the easy geometry stuff we haven't done for years that trips me up. I have no problem doing all the stats and calc you need me to do, but I'll be damned if I remember all the formulae for 3D objects.

ophiolite, what was the #1 choice school that you refer to?

Based on location, I'm going to bet...

UNC-Chapel Hill.

jpb0719, the problem with math is that it is so easy that a big percentage of people get perfect score -- this means that even if you miss like 1 stupid question, your percentile drops significantly, because there were all these other people who got all questions right

while on verbal few people get the perfect score so you can miss more questions than on math and get a higher percentile

so with math, you really have to get enough sleep and concentrate

No UCLAri I'm at UNC for my MS degree...I'll be starting at Wisconsin - Madison in the fall for my PhD. It's ranked 3rd in my field for producing tenure-track professors.

Well, I gave it a shot.

May I ask what field? Congrats on your accomplishment, and Wisconsin is an amazing school. I'm probably going the academic route myself, but I feel like I'm walking down an awful road...

Optimism yay!

Thanks UCLAri! My field is geology...geochemsitry to be exact...I'm getting scared of the academia track myself...I definately know if I'm going to stick with it I want to be at a small LAC with no graduate advising responsibilities, but I love to teach and love to get students interested in geology!

Hang in there...it will get better for all of us stressed-out graduate students....someday... :)
