My DS just got his SAT scores back from his 3rd test, the scores for each were as follows:

Test 1 --- M - 620, R - 540, W - 610
Test 2 --- M - 640, R - 540, W - 630
Test 3 --- M - 660, R - 540, W - 610

The super score would be: 1830

The overall hurts my DS, he is trying to get into the Naval Academy and has been communicating with one of the coachs for the past 6 months, he has also meet the guy. Everything has fallen into place except the SAT and ACT scores.

The Academy's min / max SAT is: M - 600 - 700 & R - 560 / 670.
The Academy's min / max ACT is: M - 26 - 32 & E - 25 - 32

He has only taken the ACT once (no prep) back in Feb and scored as follows:
Comb. - 28, M - 26, E - 31

My DS is taking the ACT again in June. Since the start of school he has been in honors pre-cal, honors physics, and college chem where he has done a lot of math.

Will the classes mantioned help with the ACT?
Is it worth his pain to take the SAT again or should he run with the ACT?

Hepl please...

I’m not sure what your actual question is.

It is worth the pain? You should ask him if he is willing to sit down for another 4 hours and take an SAT.

Should he skip taking the June test that he is registered for? That is your prerogative if you are already signed up.

Should he take the SAT in September? That depends on your ACT scores.

Does taking pre-cal help with ACT Math? The knowledge learned and used in a pre-calculus class has to potential to help answer about 6-10 questions math questions correctly (out of 60), providing he is actively reviewing such concepts.

Are his ACT scores better? Yes, according to the concordance table.

Preply,

You answered my questions, this helps a great deal. Thank you!!

He did not sign-up for the June SAT, I don’t think its too late I’ll ask him if he wants to hit it again.

6 to 10 querstions would help a great deal I think. He only need to get to a 27, with having a 26 one point is not much to hope for.

He has several ACT math concepts he is now reviewing, most of which he knows well. If he can push for two points and get a 28 that would be wonderful. A 28 would put him in the drivers seat and he would not have to take either test again.

I have no idea if gaining an extra two points on the ACT is difficult or not.

Go B’s… I see that your also in New England.

June SAT Deadline passed 2 weeks ago.

Raising 2 points in Math specifically is not necessarily difficult if he has prepared well.

I’d try to raise that ACT score - it sounds like that would be the test that works most in DS’ favor.

Is the Naval Academy Prep school an option that has been suggested to your DS? Years ago, a lot of those enrolled were recruited athletes who were academically borderline.

Are the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine Academies an option?

Thank you LAGator…

He is very solid in his academics, this is a major strength for him; he is also in the top 10 to 15% of his class which will also help (very smart class). Overall GPA is a 3.84 (unweighted) the GPA and class standing will improve at the end of the year, guidance just needs to go through everything before it’s posted.

His concern / boaderline is the ACT. After a few pre-test this past week he feels confident he can pull a 30 to 32. As of yesterday he was feeling really good. If he gets at least a 28 in the math he will be fine.

In regard to the Naval Academy Prep school, yes this is an option and one he is more than willing to take.

He took some okay classes this past year and has maintained a 4.1 GPA in all classes including, honors pre-cal, honors physics, college chem, honors Spanish 4, English, CAD, and AP US history. He is bumming because the school did not have honors chem or AP physics this year (noit enough kids). He is now happy because they have enough for AP CAL & AP Physics for his senior year.

He already has AP CAl and AP US Gov on his class load for his Sr. year and may now add AP Physics. I don’t know why he wants to do that he has already meet his expected 4 year science load adding to that madness he is taking enviornmental science. Crazy kid!!

I told him he should just relax, enjoy his two sports, enjoy his friends, and save his money from his job. To all this he will have some added responsibilities that I can’t tell him about “yet”. The coaches from his two sports have have told me he is the team captain for each sport. (One sport is a selection from the coach the other sport is a vote from 86 kids.) They told me because they understand what he is trying to do and they want to be sure it’s on his Academy and NROITC application prior to being sent. Neither coach will see him over the summer and they both thought it would be important and nice if his parents told him.

In the end it comes down to 2 points needed on the ACT and as it appears the odds are ever increasing.

In regard to MMA and coast guard, yes he has looked at them as well as the other branches of the service but he wants to stick to the family tree. He would be the 5th generation to serve in the Navy and the first to become an officer. He will also attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar this summer as well as Navy sport camp.

Preply, Thank you for the heads up on the June test date, he was signed up some time ago so he is all set…
