Thoughts on Being Accepted as "Spring Admit"

My daughter got her acceptance today but as a "Spring Admit". She is disappointed. She feels that she will be missing out on all the stuff that goes along with orientation as a freshman and making friends. She is also upset that she won't graduate on time because she will be a semester behind. Can anyone give us advice on being a spring admit. Also is there any possibility that she can be moved up to a fall admit after all the dust settles after May 1st?

There is still a chance to be bumped up to enroll in the fall. If not, that leaves time to travel, maybe get a job, or even take some GE courses at a junior college.

Congrats on her acceptance!

There is usually a good chance of being bumped up. It all hinges on how many Fall admits accept admission. Last year too many accepted, and so I don’t think many if any Springs were bumped. She won’t be behind if she goes to community college first semester and gets some GEs out of the way. It sort of sucks, but I’d say it’s about 100x better than a rejection.

Both my daughters were spring admits. While it wasn’t “perfect” they are having/had a wonderful experience.

Why do you think that your daughter won’t graduate on time (whatever that means)? She can go to a CC and get a few classes out of the way.

When and whether she makes friends is up to her. I believe that she can go to football games…at least you could before. She can rush, if she chooses in the fall following her spring admission. A spring admit can join teams (club) and get involved as fast as s/he wants to get involved.

But yes, depending on acceptance rates she can petition and sometimes people are moved up.

Will you please describe your daughters’ experience? Did they get housing, was it freshman housing, did they have problems making friends?

^yes please. So I just got my mail at 6 and got the big white package. I was all EXCITED and pumped up, until I saw Spring Admit. (sigh) Unless I get bumped up to fall, I don’t think I’ll attend. If I do get bumped up somehow, then I’ll pretty sure I’ll go. Does anyone know what percent of spring admits get bumped up every year? Is there an appeal process where I can show new information and somehow get bumped to fall admit? and how many spring admits are there? I’m scouring the USC website for this information, but can’t seem to find it.

Same. :frowning: Read the pamphlet - they highly discourage appealing/begging for fall admission. I’ve been trying to find the bump up stats myself - so far no luck. Good luck making a decision because t’s a tough one.

People on the CC USC forum say that it is somewhat common to get bumped up to fall admit if not enough people accept fall admission. Is there some sort of ranking system to this, or is it random?

Hard to make a decision because we probably won’t find out if we are bumped up to Fall until sometime during the summer. It will be easy to make a decision after April 1st when we have all our decisions in our hands. Sigh…

Right now the idea doesn’t seem too bad. Can you still apply for fall housing even if you don’t have fall classes?

Read the pamphlet that came with the packet. You cannot apply for housing until July 1and there is no ranking system to bump up. Unclear when one would be notified of a bump up if it happened.

USC is not the only university/college that has some spring admits. Here are a few I found after a brief search.

Northeastern Univ.
American Univ.
Brandeis Univ.
Univ. of California at Berkeley
Univ. of Maryland
James Madison Univ.
Middlebury
Wheaton
Skidmore Skidmore and Colby spring admits take fall semester abroad
Colby
Mt. Holyoke

Enjoy your acceptance. Four years from now, when you’re holding a degree that reads “The University of Southern California,” it will all be worth it. Congrats!

I get that I can’t register till Jul 1, and that I naturally wouldn’t have priority, but my question is when I register can I select the fall? -That it doesn’t say in the packet.

I may well be wrong, but I don’t think Spring Admits can live in the dorms until Spring (you must be an enrolled student).

I also want to give congrats to all the Spring admits! You are accepted! For what it’s worth, my son would actually have LOVED being a spring admit, but they don’t have them for his major. He wouldn’t have taken CC classes. He would have just practiced his guitar, relaxed and enjoyed a much needed break from studying! It seemed like the perfect compromise between Fall college and taking a gap year (but USC doesn’t allow deferring entrace).

I agree with jazz/shreddermom. Enjoy your extended break before college, you’re probably sick of studying after 12 years. Think of it in the positives and you’ll learn to love it.

Exactly. If I was offered Spring… I honestly would still take it, regardless if I don’t get bumped to fall. I’d probably get a job and earn money before going into USC. Sounds like a good plan, tbh! :)

As for the “will I make friends question,” an unequivocal yes. First of all, there are lots of Spring admits, so there’s immediately a bond right there. You’ll have your own orientation, to start. USC is a very social place. Think about it - if coming in a semester later precluded making friends, nobody would ever transfer colleges! Dorms and apartments are eager for “new blood” after the break. You will seem fresh and exciting.

I myself transfered at the beginning of my Sophomore year, and I’m still deeply bonded to the friends I made at the school I transferred to. And I’m very, very old.

But hopefully existing USC students who started in Spring will back this up.

I wouldn’t be horribly disappointed with Spring admit. I could get a job, work out, and relax for a while before starting up with another 4-12 years of education. Just make the best of the situation :)

I’d be thrilled to be a spring admit - I’d prefer it! Still waiting on a decision here for BFA Acting or BA Theater Arts (hoping for the latter, to be honest). But imagine - a GIANT summer. Time to sleep normally, get a job or two, read books for FUN, and sleep normally. Travel! And sleep. lol The whole time knowing you’re going to USC, and right now, you’re just resting up and getting EXCITED. AWESOME.

Just imagine how exciting that Spring day will be - after all that relaxation and all that anticipation. Oh, I’d love it. I’d love to even be accepted. I hope I am!! If not, I’ll probably go to UCI. Which will be fine…but it is not going to USC!!! :/
