Hello CC! I’m currently a sophomore in high school, so this summer I’ll be a rising junior. I totally forgot to look into any summer programs this winter, and most of the application due dates have passed. So I’m kind of panicking.
My mom is a nurse, and the hospital she’s working at is providing what they call a Career Frontier Volunteer Internship Program this summer. It’s three weeks long, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30am-2:00pm. The flier says it includes “observations, presentations by health professionals, and a variety of learning experiences.” It’s unpaid. The requirements are that you have to be a child of a hospital employee and at least 16 years old and in high school. The application is due March 20, which includes an essay on why you’d like to do it and a letter of recommendation from a teacher. If you apply and are accepted, you must be able to come to every day of the program.
The problem is that I’m not sure what I want to major in at college. While the medical field isn’t something I’m vehemently opposed to, I’m not particularly interested in it either. If I decide to go another direction, will this program still look good on college applications? Would it even look good if I did go into the medical field?
It’s a big commitment, but I don’t have many other options of things to do this summer. I would get lots of volunteer hours from this, if nothing else. I’d love to do a social sciences or language program, but everything either costs heaps of money or the application date has already passed.
I know I’m pretty uninformed about this stuff, but that’s why I’m asking for advice. So should I do this program? Do you guys know of any other free or cheap programs, especially having to do with social sciences or languages, to which I could still apply this late?
Thanks so much!!
