Thoughts on University of Houston and UAB please

I am a resident of Northern Virginia with a 2000 SAT and a 3.8/4 unweighted GPA. I am going to double major in history and something else which I have not determined yet. I'm planning on applying to a total of 8-9 colleges. I've already sent applications to Purdue, Goergia Tech, Binghamton University, Virginia Tech, William & Mary, and Mount St. Mary's (as a safety, since I get an automatic 18k/year scholarship from the Mount). I'm also planning on applying to UVA and Rhodes College. I want to apply to one more safety school where I could get almost full tuition.

I've looked at UAB, since I'm eligible for a full tuition scholarship, so I'd just be paying for room/board and books. I've also seen that the University of Houston has a TierOne Scholarship which is a full tuition scholarship with extra benefits, and I have the stats to compete for this scholarship as well.

So my question is this: What are your thoughts on these two schools, and would I be better off paying to go to one of the schools that I've already applied to (such as Purdue or Virginia Tech) or one of these schools where I'd get almost a full-ride?

P.S. I don't really want to apply to George Mason, since I believe it is overpriced, just in case any of you want to mention GMU.

50 views, but I guess no one knows anything =/

Only reason I’m asking is because I know prestige of an undergrad degree doesn’t mean much, so I’m not sure whether I should pay 20k per year or go somewhere that isn’t as good but will give me a full tuition scholarship.

what would you like to know about uab.?.. my son goes there… forensic chem and molecular biology… he took a full ride vs the other schools he was accepted to and i think it was a wise decision as he wants grad school after

would you like to know about honors programs, housing, life on campus etc?

uab scholarship would be 10k per year against tuition and fees of 14K (nmf etc get full ride)… did you mean UA for full tuition? works out about the same. uab is about 10K cheaper than ua… (ua’s housing is more expensive)

Yeah, I just want to know about the overall quality of life there, safety of the campus, etc. Based on the website, it said I’d be eligible for the Blazer Elite Scholarship, or w/e it’s called, which is 15k per year.

If you are talking about UAB (10k per year merit )you have the stats that would let you into an honors college. Global or experiential would probably be the ones you would be most interested in…experiental lets you set your own curriculum. Honors colleges at uab are small and cohesive… you are part of a group usually taking one class per semester together, along with yearlong activities ie lectures,. You would have a peer mentor and and academic advisor…peer mentors are someone in your honors college…great for tips on good courses and professors etc. vs an honors college at some schools that you are automatically accepted to and take courses designated as honors but not the same group of people.

UAB is an urban campus… downtown birmingham. Campus is very safe.

Dorms for freshman are new and suite style, upperclassman dorms are all apartment style with full kitchens, living room, (son’s even has a dishwasher) and you can choose a single bedroom or shared. (shared being cheaper)

The rec center is also new 150K sq feet… with a HUGE rock climbing wall, lazy river pool, exerise equip, squash courts, basketball etc…they also rent outdoor equipment for all kinds of activities available close to bham.

[Welcome to the UAB Campus Recreation Center](<a href=“Students | UAB”>Students | UAB)

The football team basically sucks LOL but their basketball team is pretty good. Greek life is about 6%… so it is not a typical southern u. 11k undergrads . 70% of freshman live on campus. It does not have a big oos percentage about 11% but it is ranked 5th for diversity and 11th for student happiness. It is not a party school, but son has no problem finding things to do, is constantly busy, going to concerts on campus, ultimate frisbee, rock wall climbing,

Professors are very accessible, want you to succeed, grade fairly, encourage office hours, son finds no cutthroat atttitude.

semester system so start mid august end early may. straight 4.0 grading…so no worries that a b is a 2.67 for example…anything 80’s is a 3.0

cod4pro… you just made my day… i answered before opening your link about the scholarship… i had heard they would increase it but hadnt seen that they had!! thats great news

It definitely is great news, especially for a guy like me looking for colleges haha. Anyways, thanks for your insight. I was a bit concerned about the safety, since it’s in a downtown city environment.

Anyone know anything about the University of Houston, or have attended UH?
