Thread for BS/MD BS/DO 2021-2022

Is anyone in this group decided to choose Harvard/Sanford/Tier1 colleve and giving up BSMD program?

I am hearing from lots of people saying, if you got into Harvard/Stanford-- it is once time opportunity and there is lots of opportunity at Harvard and recognition even kids don’t peruse for medicine. Most of advise is that, if student gets into Harvard, there is high chances ,he will make it to medicine via traditional path.

If you can provide me your thought on Tire 1 experience/reputation and giving up BSMD position?

Hi my D is currently debating between UMich pre-med, Michigan State OMSP for D.O., UMiami HPM Program. Does anyone have any insight that could potentially help with helping decide? We live in Michigan and she got 25k scholarship to UMiami plus will have $2,500 from being a national merit scholar.

I am also in similar situation to decide between below. Please let me know, what is your decision

Harvard/Sanford VS BSMD( Hofstra/StonyBrook/ RPI-AMC).

I am hearing that, Harvard/Sanford will offer good opportunity, however i am bit concern with final outcome of non BSMD colleges.

Look at BAMD applicants experience thread I created 5 years back. There was one girl who gave up all top tier BSMDs (including Northwestern and PLME) for Stanford and got into Harvard/Stanford//Hopkins/UCSF last year without any gap years. My son gave up UPenn and BU SMED and he got into UPenn/Hopkins/UCSF and couple of other schools and got merit scholarships also. So decide based on your/tour child’s strengths. Other than UPitt none of the BSMDs are T20s.

BTW, I am not married to traditional path  Last year my friend’s D chose BSMD based on my recommendation. I had a call with her and her parents and went thru strengths and weaknesses and convinced my friend to spend $500K+.

Good to see you agree with me on ORM parents pressure given that you have much more experience and lot of parents talk with you.

No.

Umich pre-med will be tough and seems like lot of them take gap years.

IMO, Go for BS/MD if your child is sure that medicine is the right path for him/her.
Harvard and Stanford are good, if you are not 100% on medicine …

Hello,
I am new user to this forum and it is a great resource for parents like me. First and foremost, thank you to you and all for providing valuable information. My son was accepted into below 7/8 year BSMD Programs and we request some insights/opinions to narrow down choices between these three colleges.

Requesting your opinion/advise between these three colleges for my son to prioritize:

TCNJ/NJMS vs Penn State/SKMC vs CASE (8 year program-PSP). We have eliminated RPI/AMC and UCONN from the list so far.

TCNJ/NJMS: As an NJ resident, going to TCNJ/NJMS makes it comfortable financially and proximity wise. No MCAT minimum requirement but in the acceptance letter they expected students to score 90th percentile (*Exact verbiage: Take the MCAT seriously as your first medical school requirement. While there is no minimum score, the expectation is that students will score in the 90th percentile (MCAT score of 514 or above as of 2022). TCNJ tuition scholarship received.

Penn State/SKMC: Ranking wise better, Proximity wise 3 to 4 hours from NJ, Financially-out of state fees. Better ranking, large alumni and well known east coast medical school. MCAT minimum requirement of 508. However, we are debating if this overrules the TCNJ/NJMS pros and is worth it from future medical career/residency match, etc., No scholarship received.

CASE: Better ranking than above two schools, 8 years vs 7 Years, 3.63 GPA requirement (NO MCAT), and proximity 8 hours drive from NJ, private school fees/financially harder. Partial scholarship received for undergrad,

Request guidance to narrow down from these 3 choices as they are equally good one way or the other.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Friend, It’s NOT you (or others)

If you ask me, I will be saying only good things on the CS jobs (as that’s my bread and butter)

You come from being a “successful” parent on TD path (Kudos to you and ur S). Nothing wrong with your views.

The point I was making was “its teamwork of lots of folks” and individual choices (All i am saying is Perrson A can’t take the same route because Person B did it)

I will give this as an example.
My D got an amazing deal with top UG school in California (in genetics her favorite). She’s more thrilled for that. She also got few other colleges (including the BSMD).
She then analyzed, visited and talked with cohorts, alumni of few of her favorites and chose the one she felt good (California was close 2nd).

They are in a separate category by themselves.
Medical schools will have a 40% to 75% representation of Caucasian Americans.

Congrats Ram.
First prepare COA on + and -. This should give u what u want and what is missing.

You didn’t state, what are you (your son) looking for as that may drives one way or other way.

Without knowing more (personal) stats

CASE > PSU > NJMS (academics, reputation wise and overall too).

BTW didn’t folks here had hard time reaching out to NJMS to get info( so that’s not a good communication to begin with so if there is an option I will move it lower)

If money is an issue… NJMS > PSU > CASE

Good luck

I would definitely agree with that priority. Case western is one of the best medical schools in US and also close to Cleveland clinic. Good luck you have good problem in your hand.

UPitt Honors is very underrated and its pre-med track has a lot to offer for students who take initiative. There are a plethora of medical ECs just nearby - UPMC is part of the “campus.”
The plus area around Pitt has a full college-town vibe with Carnegie Mellon, Carlow, and other universities. Plus it is in a very safe area (unlike Temple).

UNC without honors is not worth it.

If $$ is an issue, take Temple, otherwise chose Pitt.

Case > PMM/SKMC> NJMS…

If Harvard is a dream school, take Harvard. You only go to undergrad once.
Undergrad Harvard experience will be very different than Pitt.

If it is not, take Pitt GAP over Harvard and all other BS/MDs listed.
A lot of Harvard grads will be lining up for Pitt’s med school.

Thank you for your feedback. My Son is leaning towards PSU or CASE.

COA wise obviously NJMS(instate + scholarship, affordable), Penn State( Out of state+ no scholarship, makes it harder) Case is anyway in a different segment.
