Thread for BSMD 2020-2021 Applicants (Part 2)

She is waiting on BU. She likes both PSU and BU equally. She also likes UConn,
Especially foe lower cost but she is only waitlisted. We are hoping she comes off that.

My D is also waiting for BU. I guess it is coming in 2 days. Good luck.

Also CMU is ranked number one AI in the world.

AI is all over including medicine. You may want to check some joint programs if they have any.

Stanford is right there on top in AI.

I agree with Silicon Valley proximity

But in ranking CMU has been number one in AI for a while

I would avoid both for premed if you have a cheaper private T20 option.

what do they give with Egelston Scholar? I looked it up :slight_smile:
Similar to UCB Regents or UPenn scholarship my S got 4 year back, small stipend and personal attention.

I will still go with JHU. I know you want HYPSM+ tag :slight_smile:

Is $10,000 Stipend for summer research for one term only as Egelston scholar ? It is more than one would get in most universities for one summer (400 hrs). For more than one summers, it is very reasonable.

This year? It depends on when this was. Is your kid in CMU?

Few years back and I assume this should be the trend now also.

From CMU it is easy to join MD or MD PHD or startups which ever way you like.

How do stats/EC’s change from regular traditional MD/DO applications versus MD/PhD or DO/PhD?

MD/PhD are two separate admissions - One is MD admission then PhD admission. PhD admission requires some research experience and some publications will help. There are usually 2 interviews each for MD and PhD. Start with research early in freshman year. MD/PhD will require higher stats than a MD admission alone.

CMU was always topmost CS (ECE is close but not top)- Other Engineering way down - say ChE ( no BME) ranks in 20-30 etc.

However, I will any day take Caltech/MIT/Stanford EECS over CMU as all are close and all 3 much superior overall engg/STEM schools. If it is any other branch, CMU goes down the drain even with Berkeley or UT-Austin or Georgia Tech or Michigan etc.

There seems to be preference for CMU undergrads in below program

@sam2024

Dont think offered at UG level

Just looked at UCB- 0 $ compared to 25K from UCLA. UCB out.

Ok makes sense so it is it offered out of high school

Similar medical scientist programs are at JHU and Harvard also with their medical school but not after high school

@sam2024

Not clear how you join UPSOM-CMU MDPhD.

UG at CMU should be easy- D will definately get in. Will need to wait until finishing BS.

after undergrad only you might want to check if any are like BS MD
