I’m interested in hearing about your experiences of this process of applying for music technology programs as it is slightly different than kids applying to music schools who play more traditional instruments.
One of my S19s is applying for music technology/audio production.
Mine went through the process, chose a college and attended it for a year before he left. He formed a band there, some members of which he still plays with. His conservatory had two music tech programs, one for musicians (also play an instrument and audition in) and one for techs who don’t play. He did the musician one. It mainly meant lessons included and a slightly more prestigious degree.
As a small data point, only one of the kids he was friends with that first year stayed and graduated. The rest went off to work in the field, or ;like my S, a different one (but still plays).
Music technology means a lot of things. It can be technical studio work or creative composition work, and many other things. Posting on the music major forum can be helpful. In the meantime, here is a list of possible programs:
http://www.berklee.edu/majors includes contemporary writing/production, production/design, film etc.
http://www.uml.edu/FAHSS/music/Programs/Undergraduate/SRT/Sound-Recording-Technology.aspx includes internships-very well regarded nationally
http://www.northeastern.edu/camd/music/academic-programs/bs-in-music-industry/ includes coop
http://www.emerson.edu/academics/departments/visual-media-arts/undergraduate-programs/audiosound-design
http://harttweb.hartford.edu/undergraduate/music/production.aspx excellent conservatory w/music production, affordable
http://www.purchase.edu/departments/AcademicPrograms/Arts/music/programs.aspx excellent conservatory w/studio composition and studio production, just outside NYC, very affordable
http://www.clarku.edu/departments/clarkarts/music/ Clark has production elements and scoring etc. but NO AUDITION- the advantage of a college / university versus conservatory/music school (but you can submit work as an arts supplement)
Ithaca, Columbia College Chicago, some state U.'s, many choices.

Yes my son is applying to Berklee EA but has not heard yet. Auditioned using his EDI for this newer program at Berklee that allows use of EDI as principal instrument. He also plays piano, guitar, and base guitar. He applied to Peabody to computer music, NYU, and Temple (Boyer) School as well as Stevens Institute of Technology and a few other schools that have music technology but are liberal arts schools. He really wants Berklee after having spent the summer doing the five week program. Waiting to see if he gets an interview at Peabody, already auditioned at Berklee in early Dec. so hopefully he gets Berklee but the waiting is really hard. He nixed Ithaca and some others because he would have had to audition on the Piano playing classical music and he just didn’t feel that his piano was good enough to be judged in that forum.
I have heard that Berklee is the only school with EDI allowed for audition and focus of study so hope he can go there. I looks like the Peabody program has either composition or some elements of engineering- interesting. NYU is good in this area. He has some good options going!
A lot of composers and general music majors (BA included) get involved with technology at some point, and it is part of most curricula at LAC’s as well. Often kids can work independently once they have taken a course or two.
But it seems your son wants a very focused program.
The music forum is sometimes helpful on this, sometimes not, but you could post it there.
