So I've heard all the rumors (or facts) about thurston. It's a great party dorm, pretty restless and social. About Potomac, I've heard it new but it has smaller rooms and it's more quiet. I want to party, but I'll also need to study! Anyone that has been in any know whats best?

You have to find a place to study outside of Thurston. Between multiple roommates and general noise, even with headphones, you’ll be well served to find a nook in the library or someplace like that. The advantage: you 'll know a huge bunch of kids in your class - great base for the remaining three years on campus!

i lived in thurston, AND i studied in thurston, AND i had a good gpa…the myth that somehow you can’t get work done in thurston is rediculous…im sorry but u can get distracted in any dorm you live…then if thats the case, go to the library…but living in thurston DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR ACADEMICS…my advice, live in thurston…its a thing where u’ll look back and be happy to have experienced it but not want to ever live there again

S also lived in Thurston, studied in Thurston & had a good gpa. If you don’t have good study habits, you can find any excuse not to study.

Thanks for the advice! By the way, what sort of room is best in Thurston?

personally, quads are the best to live in…and some quads are like “super” quads and larger than normal sized quad rooms…doubles can also be good…there are also triples and 6 people rooms, which from what i hear, 6 person rooms are better than u would think

Potomac is newer and less congested

I would definitely advocate Potomac over Thurston. The building is much nicer, you’ll have fewer roommates, and it’s a dorm that has the reputation of being good for work AND play. You’ll have a good study environment during the week, and a good place to party on the weekends.

As someone who hasnt had a roommate before i dont completely understand your post, carly. i was under the impression that it might be more fun and an overall better experience to have more roommates. I like the idea of being able to study but still being social and agree that that is a valuable quality. But how is the potomac nicer?

ok, let me just clear the misconception for prospective students…and for current students who seemed to have never lived in thurston yet claim to know it inside in out…i happened to live in thurston, i did not live in potomac, so i cannot tell u personal experiences about it, which when people who live in potomac claim to know thurston, it baffles me…anyway thats besides the point…

anyway, if u happen to end up living in thurston:
- YOU CAN STILL GET WORK DONE IN YOUR DORM! …please everyone stop saying you cant get anything done in thurston, bc its not true…every dorm will have its distractions, i have written 10 pg papers, extensive mathematical problems, etc in my thurston dorm with no issue

THURSTON IS NOT THE OTHER DORM THAT PARTIES…yes believe it or not, every dorm has its own social life…yes, potomac parties, madison parties, lafayette, hell, dorms on the vern party…what separates thurston is that it jus happens to be the largest freshman hall on campus…so its only freaking common sense that the more people u have the more of a social life there will be

HAVING MORE THAN 1 ROOMATE IS NOT A BAD THING!..i dont know where carly got the assumption that more roomates must equal not fun?..bc let me tell u, the older u get at gw, chances are u will be living in a majority of quads

YOU CAN SLEEP IN THURSTON…nuff said

so yea, i just had to clear that up…i cant speak on behalf of the other freshmen halls bc i didnt live anywhere else but thurston, but i can speak for thurston better than others on here who have not even lived there…

feel free to ask questions

Laxboy547: I only meant that having fewer roommates provides a quieter studying environment. In my opinion, it is easier to get work done in a room with one other roommate than with five. Potomac is a much, much newer building than Thurston. Students half-jokingly refer to it as “Hotel Potomac” because of the nice accommodations.

PatM1401: I do not claim to know Thurston “inside and out,” as you put it. I have spent a great deal of time in there, however, and have copious amounts of friends who live in Thurston. The opinions I offer are based on a composite of both my experiences in the dorm as well as the experiences of my friends. I will address your other points in order.

1) Yes, you can get work done in Thurston. You can get work done anywhere if you are a truly dedicated student. However, because of the sheer enormity of students in the dorm, it can be DIFFICULT to do so, but not impossible. There is in fact a large amount of partying done during the week, and that can be distracting.

2) I have to respectfully disagree with this point on a few counts. Yes, every dorm parties; on that point, I agree with you. However, as you point out, Thurston is the largest freshman hall on campus. Lafayette, a dorm you mentioned and the dorm that I currently live in, holds only about 200 or so students, whereas Thurston houses over 1,100. Based on numbers alone, the partying will be more prevalent in Thurston. As you point out, “its (sic) only freaking common sense that the more people u (sic) have the more of a social life there will be.”

3) I never meant to insinuate that having more roommates is not fun, and am sorry that my comments were misinterpreted that way. That is not my viewpoint at all. I only meant that, again, it may be more difficult to get work done or find adequate sleep time if you are living with five other people as opposed to one. This is not necessarily true, however, as a room of six people may be able to respect each other’s needs and get along fine, whereas in a smaller room setting you may have the roommate from hell who completely disregards your needs.

4) It is decidedly more difficult to sleep in Thurston. Again, not impossible, just more difficult. I speak from experience on this one.

Again, my comments are not an attempt to dissuade anyone from living in Thurston should they want to. I can only answer questions based on my own experiences and those of my friends. Based on those experiences, I still advocate Potomac over Thurston.

thansk for the clarifcation…we can agree to disagree on some topics…however,it bothers me still when people stay…even…its more “difficult” to get sleep…thats just so baseless and untrue…ive slept fine/…anyway, im beating a dead horse now…obviously, every dorm will appeal to different people…so if u want a smaller close knit dorm, madison and lafayeete are good, …if u want a newer, yet larger dorm, potamac is good…and if u want an experience with the largest frshman drom…then go to thurston

also, the majority of thurston is comprised of quads, followed by triples and doubles…the smallest percentage of thurston is 6-people rooms, but even then, 6people rooms are quite lagre and broken into sections to avoid one large room of beds

In short, Thurston reputation is just a myth!. Of course if you put 1000 Freshmen together, who are for the 1st time alone, without constant parent supervision, is going to lead to more noise, but after the first 2 weeks, and homework begins, and tests are coming up, everything calms down incredibly, and it’s just another dorm
Just enjoy the 1st year, by far is the best!

What are the chances a RD Freshman can even get into Potomac???

CJ:just as good as in any other dorm. It’s almost all by chance. good luck!
