TI - 89 vs. TI - 83

I prefer the TI-89 because of the Computer Algebra System ("solve" is my best friend) and the "pretty print" feature (displays entries and answers the way you'd write them, and in exact form if you prefer). I find that the CAS and pretty print tend to prevent a lot of stupid mistakes, as well as allowing you to solve problems more quickly, especially for calculus. Additionally, if you get the TI-89 Titanium (extra memory), you can get a lot of great programs for calculus from TI's program archives. When I was preparing for the AP Calc BC exam, I was about 80% on non-calculator problems, but I hardly ever missed calculator questions (and I did them faster, too). Also, don't worry about your calc class--if you know the TI-89 well, it won't matter if the TI-83 functions and syntax are different. Trust me, three of my friends and I had TI-89's all year, while everybody else was using 83's, and we never had any problems.

Thank you GDWilner. I'll take your word that the TI-89 can serve me just as well as the TI-83 can. Right now, I'm just a little concerned about taking the time to master the TI-89.

ti-83 power! (and u dont need 89 to get 800 on the IIC...)

If you're in calculus next year, the nice derivative and integrate functions will help you out. I mean, if you experiment with it, you'll figure it out. And, it does come with a hefty manual that while big, is also quite informative.

You don't necessarily need to master it right away, you really just need to know the basic functions at first. You can use the manual to learn what you need to know as you go along rather than devoting a lot of time to learning to use the TI-89. Doing simple equations on the calculator is really pretty easy, it won't take you much time at all to get going. The manual has examples that will show you every keystroke you need to make for any given equation, and you'll learn shortcuts as you go along. I don't think that you'll regret purchasing a TI-89. If you can afford a big of an upgrade I recommend the titanium edition, it has more memory.

Decisions, decisions... ilovemath314159 stated that you don't need a TI-89 to get a 800 on the IIC, but yet everyone else is telling all these great functions and whatnot about the TI-89. Has anyone gotten a 800 with the TI-83?

I got an 800 on MathIIc with a TI-83+.

TI-83 it is then.

Any last minute objections? Haha.

Get both? idk

Flipsta-G: Get both? idk

Hahaha!

You don't NEED a TI-89 to get an 800 on MathIIc, but it would probably help (as long as you get used to the calc first).
I am not sure which one you should get. Perhaps flip a coin?

How about for Calc AB/BC?

I know that most kids in my school will have 83+'s, and everything we learn in class will be with the 83+.

Will the benefits of an 89 outweigh the fact that I'll be one of the only people using it and I'll have to become familiar with it by myself?

yes i got my 800 with the 83+. his name is harry, and we have a wonderful relationship thankyouverymuch

i used harry for my 800M on the new SAT too, but thats really basic math anyway, u can use any calc

Yeah, that's true. How about the AP Calc/Stats exams?

There is no reason to get the TI-83. It is a useless calculator with a lack of features.

Get the TI-89 - it doesn't take that much time or work to master (it's menu and OS is much more intuitive and easier to use than the 83's god knows what system). I don't see why you wouldn't get the 89 either because it can solve algebra and do a bunch of awesome great stuff.

Ohhh boyyy... this is quite difficult to decide!!!

ok spartan, so say you have the 83 and youre really happy with it. i guess if i didnt have a calc, and i had a choice i would get the 89, but i mean are you saying that the 89 is SO much better that i should purchase it even though i already have an 83+ (that i love)

Yup. You really should. It's worth every penny. Lots of kids at my school have...I had both but ended up selling the 83+.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

dont worry harry, I'LL NEVER LEAVE YOU
