TIME magazine says...

30% of american high school students do not recieve a high school diploma.

that doesnt seem realistic does it?

it seems very realistic-- where do you go to school?

public school where 99%+ graduate

yeah i think we have 91-94% percent recieve diploma

well, thats very far from where I am, apparently. 30% seems about right for my school. also, take into consideration appalachia, swampy florida, inner cities, etc. we aren't all in academic candyland.

or, rather, socioeconomic candyland

In my opinion, that's too alarming to be true. I mean sure, there's quite a bit of students that don't go on to college, but I couldn't imagine that many not getting a high school diploma...

I live in rural Georgia and the graduation rate is something like 95% Of that, 80% or so go to college.

So those numbers are crazy to me.

Sounds weird to me too. 20% seems more realistic, but Time does have all the statistics or whatever, so, whatever.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1181646,00.html

I go to a school where 100% graduate except for the people that got expelled, left, etc.

It's very realistic. I'm not sure where you ppl go to school, but at my old school many many ppl would drop out.

Yeah, lots drop out here, it's really sad, several seniors have dropped out now in April, and they only have about 2 months to go . . i guess they just couldn't take it anymore

The few dropouts here do so in the lower grades, and are usually black males; some move away, but 2006 started with a freshmen class of 540 and will graduate 410. In the inner city graduation rates are below 50% in most areas; at Glenville the rate is in the 30% range, since the city has been known to inflate its attendance and graduation rates.

Many people drop out in my school too.

sarorah, does your area have major coal mines anymore? That might be the reason why.

lol YES, sort of near
hahaha, you're probably right, i bet a lot of guys drop out to go work in the coal mines

And the girls must do something; perhaps they run family businesses in the area. Some I am sure flee to the bigger places such as Roanoke and possibly even Nashville and the Triangle looking for work as well, but many will stay in the town. My next question is: is the football team any good, and does it garner many scholarships?

Yep, a lot will have jobs around the area
No, football team isn't good at all . . seems like you're trying to do a search on me/the area i live in? haha

No, I am trying to figure out why you have as many dropouts as you do when said people are not taking jobs. Besides, I don't need to search, I have six of my father's coworkers and an English teacher from the region. In addition, I also know enough about the place from someone who went down there every summer for 28 years as well.
