Tip for the UC Personal Statement

It's kind of late for this,
but if hopefully this helps someone somewhere

If you are over your word count by a few words, and are stressing about where to cut some out:

find all your contractions
(like can't, I'm, she's)

delete the single quote thing ( ' <-what ever this is called)

and then type it back in.

It only works in the textbox on the application.

I had copy and pasted my essays from Word Perfect, and they were the right amount of words there, but in the UC it was over.
Then I figured out that they counted the contractions as two words.
I don't know why the process I just told you up there ^ works,
it just does.

hope this can help! good luck :D

hey thanks, this was actually pretty helpfull.

I would recommend for contractions to not be used. :x

That's interesting, though. I know it counts hyphenated words (such as "well-dressed") as two words. I wonder if deleting the dash and typing it again works the same way. I already submitted my application, though, and it wouldn't make that much of a difference on my word count, anyway.
