What region are you specifically looking at?

Med school is expensive, so you want your college education to have as few loans as possible, and pretty much as cheap as possible.

Med school admissions is numbers-based, so where you study doesn’t matter provided it is accredited. You can get the pre-med coursework just about anywhere, so that is good too.

What can your family pay for college? Find that out so you know how deep and how far you have to dig to get the aid you need.

How close will you be to being able to work as a dental hyegenist when you finish your associates? That could be a much better paying part-time job than your typical student job in the university cafeteria or library.

I would like colleges along the east coast however im thinking about attending a college in GA to increase my chances of getting into Morehouse school of medicine, where I have already attended summer internships there.

@happymomof1

My plan is to graduate HS with the degree and work for 2-3 years and save up for med school and take out a small loan to help pay for med school.

I will be able to work as a dental hygienist soon after I take a certification. However im not sure of my chances of landing a job due to my age and due to the fact the an associates is entry level

What colleges are good for African Americans who are pre-med majors and looking to get accepted into med school?

There is a thread at the top of the Financial Aid Forum about automatic scholarships. You might qualify for some of them now. If you can raise your ACT or SAT score a bit, you definitely will qualify for more of them. Several of these are HBCUs and so would have good histories of helping African American students achieve their goals. Please remember though, that there is no one magic place to go to college to be more likely to get into med school. Any of the places on that list could work just fine.

I assume pre-dental hygiene means you have completed the requirements to apply to a dental hygiene program. That is a 2-year full-time program leading to an associates degree in dental hygiene. You have to pass clinical and written board exams and then you get a license. Not sure what “certification” you are talking about, but you can’t be a hygienist without a license.

@dentmom4

Thank you so much for clearing that up. I didn’t even realize that a Pre-Dental Hygiene degree is useless if you are trying to get a job. So because of that I have decided to change major and get a associates degree in Health Information Management instead since pay looks OK and I wanted to do something heath related and time flexible once I being a traditional college. Does Health Information Management related jobs require exams or licensing?

Doesn’t your school help you with this? Best to map out a course of study with a school counselor.

You can do a google search about HIM jobs–looks like data entry in a health care setting. There is an exam called RHIT that you can take after you receive an associates that gives you a certification that many employers look for. Is your HIM program accredited?

@dentmom43 yeah they do help to sort out things like this but its on a weekend. Its best i just wait and ask my early college counselor when I have time during the week.
