Tips and tricks to getting the classes you want

To the Boston College class of 2015,

As the orientation days draw closer, I wanted to provide you with a few tips and tricks to getting the courses and the professors you desire. Many of you will get the short end of the straw, where you will end up last to register for classes in your orientation session. Usually this means you will be locked out of desired courses as well as desired professors.

Now if you plan on attending the earlier orientation sessions (1-6), there is hope you will be able to get your courses. On Tuesday morning (when people pick courses), go on to BC’s UIS system (a program you can download from BC’s website) and choose your classes with the professors you want. Most of them should be open at that time.

If you cannot get UIS to work out, you can just call student services and they’ll be glad to do it for you.

These are just some little tricks that I have learned about course registration :)

thanks for the info. are there any particular classes freshmen usually take? What classes are taken first by most to get rid of the core requirement? thanks!

Popular classes for incoming freshman are: Perspectives (Theology/Philosophy), English Lit, and Freshman Writing Seminar. Other courses that you may be closed out of are calculus, economics, history, language, and computers in management (CSOM). There are probably a few classes I’m missing here, but this is pretty much the general trend. If what I mentioned does not work, you can always just utilize the add/drop period to your advantage.
