My S was accepted for entrance in the Fall of 2012, pre-business. We are OOS and have planned a visit in a few weeks, but won't be there on a Red Carpet day. We have reached out to the host program for help planning "an admitted students version" of the usual campus and Kelly tours, but haven't heard back yet. S would also like to sit in on a class.

This is our first visit to IU, but the only one we will have before he makes a final choice between his top 3 schools. Any tips from current students (or parents of current students) for things to see/do while we are there to help him make his final decision? Would appreciate any suggestions on places to eat around town to get a feel for the student body too.

On both our visits, we stayed in the Indiana Memorial Union, which had the best location (right on campus) and best prices in the area. Rooms were very nice, and we ate breakfast in the cafeteria in the building. If you are not from a fellow-cold state, be sure to tell your S how great the campus is during fall and spring, when it’s warmer, with all the trees, etc. Walk up Kirkwood for dinner & shopping.
Also be sure to get the scoop on the recent $33 million donation to complete the $90 million plan to expand and renovate the business school!

Thanks MidwestMom! S knows how gorgeous campus is in the Fall and Spring, so if he likes in February, we KNOW it’s the place for him! LOL
Yes, recent announcement of donation to Kelley project certainly caught S’s attention!!

Did you reach out to the Kelley ambassador host program or the IU one? If your son is set on business, definitely do the Kelley one. Here’s the email and link: bushost@indiana.edu

I suggest visiting the SRSC, which is the rec center with a pretty good weight room. Also, the IMU is a good place to visit. It’s the second biggest student union in the nation and features a hair salon, book and clothing store, Baja Fresh and Burger King, pool tables and a bowling alley to play at. Classes are a good idea. I also HIGHLY suggest taking him to all the restaurants on 4th street. IU has so many restaurants to choose from: Thai, Ethiopian, Burmese, Italian, etc. Kirkwood is also a good place to go through. It’s pretty lively at night, as the bars are mostly all on it. After a walk through the arboretum, you’ll both be hooked on IU. We pride ourselves on being a beautiful campus. In addition to this, IU has the Kelley SOB which is a top 20 business school with top 10 programs in it, the best Folklore department in the world, and the most languages offered in the nation. You can learn Swahili (though I don’t know how useful it would be)! Overall, it’s a lively atmosphere. I visited in winter of last year, and I was sold on the beauty, and the fact that everyone was so friendly to me while I was there. That’s another big thing you’ll notice. I hope you both enjoy your visit.

You didn’t say whether your son is interested in the KLLC, but if he is you should visit it and tour. Even if he isn’t interested, it’s probably the best way to get a tour of the McNutt given by a student.

Thanks everyone, great advice! Looking forward to visiting!
Hkem123, thanks for the bushost tip! S did send them an email today and already received a reply back! CC is awesome!! :)

I agree with all of the above suggestions but would add a visit to the IU Auditorium, the building itself is impressive, check out the murals inside. IU has a variety of performances here from John Stewart to the Flaming Lips. Also, if you think you may be interested in Greek life check out the fraternities and sororities on Jordan. There is so much to see, you should definitely walk around the town. In addition to the various ethnic restaurants, Farm is a great place for lunch or dinner. Try Scholars Inn for breakfast. Have fun.

Hilton Garden Inn is very nice, it is probably 15-20 minute walk from the hotel which is in town to campus. I have also stayed at Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express, both nice, however, you will need to drive to campus from these locations.
