Visit help

My son has been admitted to Kelley and honors.
What should we make sure we do during a visit. I know there are red carpet days.
I've also read about the HOST program, where they match you up with a student.
There is a special program just for Kelley direct admits in March.
What should my son plan to attend? Most likely we will be flying from Maryland, we will probably only make one trip, and I'd like to keep missing school to a minimum. Also, any hotel recommendations?

Thanks

We lucked out and did it ALL in one extended weekend last year. Friday evening March 1 was the Kelley DA reception (we really found this worthwhile), Saturday March 2 was the Kelley DA program (good information), Sunday we explored campus and the wonderful ethnic restaurants, Monday March 4 was a Red Carpet Day AND DD did the Hutton Honors host program. I think that is different from the HOST program, so you may want to call the Hutton Honors college to ask about the HH host program. So on Monday, DD went to the morning Red Carpet events, then met her HH host late morning, went to 2 classes and had lunch with her host, while I attended the afternoon Red Carpet events without her  And it just so happened that Monday March 4 she had no school (unused snow day), so she just missed school Friday afternoon. The only caveat is that we had visited IU before, so the Red Carpet Day activities were pretty much repeats of things we’d already seen and heard. If this is your first visit, I think the Red Carpet Day activities (or Discover IU Day) might be more useful than the HH host program. (We originally wanted to do the HH host program on Friday March 1 but they didn’t have any hosts available that day.) While DD found the HH host program to be useful, one of the two classes she attended was a total snoozer for her (Honors Art History).

Anyway, DD was so impressed with all the events during that long weekend that this year as an IU freshman she is a Kelley Ambassador (so she’ll be at the Kelley DA reception and will be giving tours of the Kelley LLC throughout the semester) and a HH host!

Having said all that, I recommend that your visit include these things in priority order: (1) the Kelley DA program (including the reception, if possible), (2) a Red Carpet Day OR a Discover IU Day (they’re not much different), (3) a Host program either through the Office of Admissions or the Hutton Honors College.

As far as hotels, the Biddle Hotel in the Indiana Memorial Union is the most convenient. We’ve never stayed there so I can’t give firsthand advice. We’ve stayed at either the Homewood Suites or TownePlace Suites, which are a short drive from campus. There are other hotels that are closer to campus.

Whatever you decide to do, I recommend making reservations soon, for both the IU events and your hotel room. Both fill up quickly, so it’s better to make reservations and cancel them than miss out because tours or hotels are full.

We visited campus a couple of times since did not do Red Carpet Days (remember he will also have required orientation in June). My daughter did do the host visit, it wasn’t as long as she had hoped, about 4 hours, but the student took her to a class lecture, a quick tour and it was during this visit she decided which neighborhood she wanted to live in. It was a good personal visit. If you can join your son for orientation in June, as a parent I felt it was vital. I learned a lot during that visit.

We usually stay on the southwest side of campus at Marriott Town place suites or Fairfield, it is about a 10 min into campus, but away from parking problems and there are chain restaurants. All hotels fill up VERY quickly and some have minimum stays for certain weekends. For instance graduation/move out weekend can be booked full over a year in advance.

We stayed at the hotel in the Indiana Memorial Union when we visited. Very convenient and nice accomodations. I don’t recall how the cost compares to hotels off campus. The Union is a cool building so even if you don’t stay there you should try to walk through it at some point during your visit.

Hello! I am an admitted student this year. I am attending the Red Carpet Day on March 7th (Friday) with a Kelley pre-reception at 7pm on the same day. Direct Admit Day for Kelley students is the next day on March 8th. The Biddle Hotel is sold out on that Friday night but there are other hotels just off-campus like Travel Lodge and Hampton Inn.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn when I visited because the shuttle from the airport stops there. It was reasonable priced, close to campus, but nothing special. Has an OK free breakfast and rooms were clean.
