Would anybody like to share any tips or things they wish they'd known for an alumni interview?

Do a search on the Duke forum for ‘interview help,’ ‘interview tips,’ or ‘interview hints.’ We have one or two alumni interviewers who have posted tens of times, each time with paragraphs of helpful information-- exhaust that first.

I’m one of those alumni interviewers and I wholeheartedly agree with purplecorn’s suggestion (in fact, you should probably have done so BEFROE initiating this thread). Above all else, relax, be yourself, be enthusiastic regarding Duke, explain specifically why – and how – you want to make a real addition to your class and the the University, and understand that the interview is a relatively inconsequential part of your application file.

My S had his Alumni interview yesterday. He said it was VERY casual. The interviewer asked him to send him a resume ahead of time and just asked him one or two questions about it. The rest of the time was just the interviewer talking about Duke and giving him advice about his major. They also talked a bit about his interests. At the end he said he thought my S would be a good fit for Duke and that was the end of it. Very low pressure, very relaxed. So my only advice to you is to just be prepared to know something about the school and why you want to go there but just relax and be yourself.

I did my interview for Duke today, and having done one other alumni interview before I thought I knew what to expect; I didn’t. The guy didnt ask me a single thing about why I want to attend Duke, instead he focused on my school, my family, and even threw in a curveball (if you could talk to the president for an hour, what would you ask him?) in fact, a majority of the interview was spent with him asking me questions on political/global issues, and thats not even related to my major! i kind of got the impression he didnt see me as a good fit for the school and was just asking random questions to fill the time maybe im reading too much into it. either way, my other interview definitely went better than my Duke one…

You should know that it’s very easy for your interviewer to see this and seeing as you’ve already posted when you interviewed with him and the type of questions he asked, it wouldn’t be hard for him to put two and two together.

Be careful what you post online.
