Tips for applications for NSLI-Y? I am applying in a few months

ALthough it is a few months until applications, I am very curious about how hard it is to get into the summer program
What do they look for on applications?
Will applying as a Freshman put me at a disadvantage?
For "awards," could I use track state medals (2nd and 6th in different events for the state championship?)

Thanks so much!

I’m afraid I can’t answer your questions, just add one more. Does the 2015-2016 applications include the 2015 summer program? Or was the 2015 summer program included in the 2014-2015 app?

The 2015 summer program has not been released

They look for maturity and potential-- most importantly, what you’re going to do with this experience. They also look for evidence that you can handle the curriculum (grades, etc). The admit rate when I applied was about 10%-15%. But don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it your freshman year! An amazingly successful alumn I know got into a summer program on her third try and is now spending the year in Morocco. I’m a summer Arabic alumn for Oman-- if you have any more questions, feel free to contact me, and good luck!

Hello all. This thread looks a little old, I don’t know if there is a more recent one? My d is planning on applying for the 2015-2016 summer program. Do you know what the difference is between the year program with NSLI-Y and YES abroad? Is it hard to be accepted into the NSLI-Y year long program if this is your first time applying (rather than someone who has completed a summer with NSLI-Y). If you go as a “gap year” between sophmore and junior years, can you still come back and take the PSAT for a chance to qualify as a Merit Scholar? For the YES abroad program, if you are enrolled at an IB school (and are also enrolled at one in the states prior to going), will the year at IB overseas with YES count as an academic year…and if so are all the classes in the language you are learning…will they be apart of your GPA when you return?

I have no idea about I.B. school credits since transferring them depends on your state. Is your daughter currently a 10th grader? I’m a 10th grader applying to study abroad in Russia or Ukraine from 2015-2016!

I used to attend an I.B. middle and currently attend an arts academy, but if I remember correctly, I.B. encourages global studies. If you talk to the school registrar and a counselor you can probably get it all sorted out with the program counting for one language credit with an honors weighting.

If she is accepted to NSLI-Y, I would also recommend that she supplement her Junior year with online classes in the summer before departure to her host country. I have junior credits for every subject excluding my sciences. If she knocks all of her credits out of the way than she will be afforded less stress at trying to make them up and the perfect opportunity for a gap year.
