Tips for Chem 142!!

i'm taking chem 142 autumn quarter!! i would love to have some advice/input from people who've taken the course!

I’m also taking chem 142 this quarter. And the thing I hear from most people is that it isn’t too hard if you study when you need to for the appropriate time (1-2hrs everyday i think it was). There isn’t any shortcuts to getting a good grade except for just planting your face into the textbook(s). But, this isn’t from me, so any advice others could add would be awesome!

Do all the recommended end of chapter problems out of the book.

Make sure you understand every topic 100% and if you don’t, talk to your TA about it.

Do as much preparation as possible ahead of time for the labs and make sure you know exactly what calculations you’re going to do for the writeup. You don’t generally have enough time after you actually perform your lab to work everything out on the spot.

Form a study group and post on the class bulletin board to see if you can get 3-4 (tops) other people interested. If you don’t take the initiative, nobody else will either.

ALEKS (the online system you will be using) weights very lightly on your grade, but it is essential to do it to completion anyways to ensure you understand and can apply all the concepts.

Don’t blow off the quiz section worksheets. Chances are very good that you will see similar questions on the tests.

(This applies to every popular general prereq class you will take) Google is your friend for finding old tests and test keys. Search for old 142 midterms/finals and practice as many as you can find. They will cover many of the same topics you will see on your exams, and will prepare you well.

what book do you need for chem 142? did you buy yours from the UW bookstore or amazon? what is ALEKS??

ALEKS is an online learning system that walks you through concepts and gives you a lot of practice on them. The textbook can be bought on Amazon, but make sure it’s the right edition. The lab manual you should buy from the UW Bookstore just in case there are any changes.

What percent in the course do you need to get an A (3.7-4.0)??

Your grade will depend on how well you do compared to the rest of the class. Everyones’ grade will be adjusted so that the average grade is 2.6 on a 4 point scale.

so it must be epically hard to get a high grade… :frowning: i want to start strong b/c of premed
