I also want to know about Chem 142. Have you checked MyUW for your professor yet? I have Andrea Carroll… any tips or suggestions to succeed in that class?

@UDubhopeful: What Chem lecture do you have? I have Chem 142 B and my professor doesn’t show up there yet… same thing for Math 124.

I asked my friend who took both Math 124 and Chem 142 last year, and he didn’t do any prep for either class before the quarter started. He basically went to every lecture and quiz section, didn’t procrastinate, and if he had any questions at all he IMMEDIATELY asked the TA (quiz section/lab) or professor about it. He got a 4.0 that quarter. Also, he hadn’t taken AP Calc or AP Chem in high school, just precalc and introductory chem class.

hey i have the same professor too!
i have a friend who had her and she liked her. she said as long as you read the textbook and understand the material, the class was not bad, but she did have 2 years of chem prior to taking chem 142.
but again i am hearing a lot of bad stuff about chem 142 and people’s opinions differ so idk how she will be like until lecture comes up xP

Nevermind! I refreshed my schedule on myUW and I have Andrea Carroll as well!! :D

I haven’t heard ‘preferences’ for Chem 142, but I have heard that as long as you don’t slack off a lot then you’ll be fine, regardless of professor. I hear tons of bad stuff on Chem 142 from lots of students, but probably because it’s considered a ‘weed out’ classes for premed students. Most people drop their premed track after Chem 142 because it’s too difficult for them.

I think as long as we work hard, have a concrete study habit/study group, we should be fine.

What quiz sections do you guys have? My lecture/quiz section is B/BA.

I have Campbell, Charles. Anyone rumors or facts about him?? I’d love to hear.

Some people’s opinions:

[Charles Campbell - University of Washington - RateMyProfessors.com](Charles Campbell at University of Washington | Rate My Professors)

Hmm…

ahhh lucky! i wanted to get into BA.
i have BH and i have no idea who’s in my quiz section… :(

So not much preparation needed for Chem 142?

I talked to some people and Andrea Carroll isn’t as bad as ratemyprofs paints her as… most of the people who posted on there just did badly in the class, but good grades ARE doable. My friend had her the entire chem 142/152/162 series and did well, and said Carroll does an amazing job of teaching concepts.

BUMP for more info on MATH 124 ONLY… Thanks!

Hey, I have Andrea Carroll as well. A sophomore told me that she throws candy during her lecture and that her class wasn’t particularly hard. Most of her tests are multiple choice and the quizzes are online.

Are you in the FIG Chem 142 B?

^^^ I agree that the above session is good to go to. The Chem professors show up and can answer your questions and easy your worries.

I didn’t prep for Chem 144 (the “advanced” version of 142) at all, and as long as you took chem in high school (I personally took pre-AP) the beginning is not too hard. I don’t think it is a class where you need to start prepping in advance, unless you have never ever taken a chem class before.

I didn’t take Math 124 at UW, but I do recommend that once classes start, you go check out the Math Study Center. Unless you are a genius who knows all the answers, it is a really great resource and has good hours (check the Math dept website for them). You could also go to CLUE, but I’ve found the MSC to be a lot better study environment and it is easier to grab a tutor to help you out with tricky problems, than it is to get one at CLUE.

^^Thank you
^Thank you because I have taken chem in high school as well.
