Tips for passing Chem2045

I have Chem with Mitchell. I know it’s supposed be a hard class and I don’t have a very strong chemistry background. Most of the stuff I’ve learned in high school and intro I’ve forgotten. I know doing book problems is one way to learn and going to the CLC. Does most of the stuff Mitchell cover in lecture end up on his exams? Does he go over possible exam questions in class and does he work out problems in class? Should I actually read the book chapter by chapter or just go over certain section Mitchell emphasizes or that I have trouble with and mostly stick to doing book problems? And will the exams mostly be math related problems or will will there be questions that don’t involve math loft example “what is a mixture?” or “what do we observe in chemistry?” Basically things that you would know only by reading the textbook? I’ve done well in my other science classes and this is the only Chem class I’m required to take for my major and I want to get at least a B. I also don’t want to pay for tutoring like study edge and I haven’t had to yet and I don’t want to spend money. Any advice?

Well, Mitchell is known as one of the harder teachers (Korolev being the best, currently) but for me I just tried to do the homework before they were taught in lecture, so that during the lecture all my information is being reinforced and/or corrected. For me, it’s easier going into a class with somewhat familiar material than completely alien material. Always do the practice exams. The Chemistry exams are written by multiple teachers, and the practice exams tend to be pretty identical to the exams they administer. Personally, I had no need for the textbook. If you can try switching so Korolev is your professor. I heard the average with Mitchell on exams is like 75% while Korolev is closer to 80%.

I think the class is pretty much you will pass if you do the work, for sure. If you want an A, make you always do all practice exams available. Even review past homeworks and redo them if you’re shaky (people tend to forget about calorimetry towards the ends of the semester).

Can you ask around to see if anyone you know is in StudyEdge and they can share with you? They can be taking another class but can download the packets for you. This will not help with the reviews or videos since you need to actually be a member to get those.

honestly I thought I wasn’t going to need to use any tutoring for it but ended up buying study edge the day after taking the first exam last semester. I definitely bombed that test but ended up doing a lot better because of the extra practice problems (I didn’t like going to class so it helped with that). I did pretty well in the rest of the class and got a good grade so the investment was worth it and i’m actually using them for chm2046 this semester. Office hours can be helpful too! good luck!

I had Korolev for general chemistry 1 and she was the absolute best. However, I still bought study edge (the $50 a month with chapter and exam reviews) because it was really helpful to have the material taught over again in a more simpler way and to have more practice to use to study for the exams.Without study edge I probably wouldn’t have passed the class, so I highly recommend using it!

But, if you are looking for tutoring services that are free, Broward teaching center holds exam reviews around the time that there is an exam and they are free. Just go on their website or you can go to Broward teaching center itself to see when the next exam review is. I went to the final exam review and it was super helpful because it went over questions that were typical of the exam. Hope this helps!
