Tips on Approaching Counselor

I’m a high school freshman and I want to approach my guidance counselor about my 4 year plan and taking a chemistry class at the local community college. I am shy and worried that she will discourage me/not take me seriously. Do you guys have any tips on what I should say/how I should say it?

Also what are your opinions on taking science classes to accelerate? I plan on taking chemistry and physics outside of school so that I can take all APs junior and senior year.

If you’d do this even if you were not planning for college, id’ say go for it. If you are starting gaming with an eye towards a highly competitive college, I’d say it is unfortunate. Spend the 4 years of high school becoming the best person you can.

Guidance counselors are there to help students through the 4 year process. Whatever your counselor recommends, she is looking out for you and making sure you aren’t overwhelmed.

When school starts after the break, go to the guidance office and sign up for a guidance appointment. The odds are good that she will start seeing her other guidance kids about their 4 year plan once she has her current Seniors set for college. But there’s no harm in signing up for an appointment and getting started early.

But don’t assume that she’ll automatically discount your ideas; you’re probably not the first driven kid she’s worked with.
