Tips on my common app essay?

So I'm almost done with my essay for this topic:
A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

I decided to talk about my first encounter with Japanese culture and how my life changed with it. Therefore this experience taught me the importance of a diverse community(because I didn't struggle to "find my identity")
My story, in my opinion, is entertaining and well written, but I feel that I focused too much on my actions rather than my traits.

Can anyone give me tips on how to incorporate my passion for the Japanese culture (volunteer work, dreams of a future there, etc) ??
