Hey NJ. I am a Junior and looking to enroll at Tisch for Film Production
Gender: Male
Location: Westchester, New York (near the city)

Academics:
GPA: 3.6 unweighted, around a 3.9 weighted
Sat: I dont think I am going to send them, did not like the test, preferred ACT.
ACT: 28, going to take again
Haven't taken SAT II's yet, but can I send in my ACT with writing in place for them?

EC:
President of my film club
Various other clubs
Captain of my tennis team
Interning at my tennis coaches autistic school

Now I know my portfolio is a huge part of this process. I have made several films, and have asked various professors and filmmakers what they thought, most reviews very positive. Would it be a good idea to ask my friend who goes to NYU now for a recommendation, his documentary was recently played on Showtime, and his new documentary is being aired on ESPN (very successful). Also what should I include in my creative resume? My recommendations would be very strong, and my essays would as well. I have a huge passion for film and the village, and would most probably incorporate those into my essays haha. Also does NYU Tisch favor the SAT more, or does it not matter, and what is lowest grade you can get on the ACT to be admitted? Thanks so much

I mean, once again there's no way I could possibly know what the auditors are looking for artistically, but your grades and test score is definitely good academically for Tisch. You can call NYU about recommendations, but do NOT send in more than the required recommendations, unless you get permission. They'll just probably throw anything extra away without prior notice, because they have to go through THOUSANDS of applications, and they don't want to make their lives harder (well, you don't want to, either haha). And there's no preference...NYU takes either the ACT (with writing) or the SAT and weighs them equally. There is no "lowest" grade to be admitted, but you'd do best by going on the website and checking the median range for NYU admittants (I think it's like between 29-31 is the middle 50%) but a 28 is definitely really, really good. You can send in SAT II scores by requesting it when you take the test, and you don't have to take the SAT Subject Test to have SAT IIs sent. But also know that they're not required for Tisch (since the audition is another factor weighed for admissions). But I guess they wouldn't hurt :-). Good luck!

Thank you so much, and one more thing, can I send my ACT (with writing) in lieu of my SAT and SAT II's? This is not only for NYU, but any school. Thanks

You have to look up policies for each school, but if the school says they accept either the ACT or the SAT, then you can send one or the other (or both, if applicable). So the answer to this question specifically for NYU and schools like NYU which accept both tests, is yes.

Yes, of course haha, but to be honest, it's not very likely...there are many floors in Brittany and you'd be lucky to get the 7th floor randomly. Ever considered calling the housing office? I was able to request my Palladium single because I called them :-). You should give it a shot!

I am just going off of the NYU housing Wiki. Apparently Brittany is very close to the Film classes, and the rooms on floor seven are quite spacious and are only doubles.

Any other recommendations for dorms that are close to the film classrooms?

All of the Washington Square dorms are close to the Tisch building on 721 Broadway, where your film classes would be. The absolute closest would probably be Weinstein, Goddard, and Brittany. But honestly, Hayden and Rubin are also really close, Hayden being across the square from Goddard and Weinstein and Rubin also a short walk away.

I am not sure if you would know this..... Would the final cut lab in Third North really outweigh the fact that it is further away from Wash Square? Also, is Third North that nice of a dorm? I have heard it is just a dirtier UHall...

Ehh, I honestly wouldn't know about film stuff like that, but there's free printing at Third North :-). You'd have to ask a film major.

Third North is a nice dorm, but I kind of get what people mean as in it's a dirtier U-Hall haha. But, Third North's dorms are nice, you'd definitely survive. It's really social, as the largest freshman dorm in the country, and there's stuff going on there all the time. You couldn't go wrong with either dorm, although if you value sterility and nice-looking over social atmosphere, U-Hall might be a better pick. Well, actually, I take that back a little bit...U-Hall does have a social atmosphere, but it depends on what types of people you hang out with there. But then again, every freshman class is different, so those judgments are hard to make...gahh, I'm confusing myself, but you get the point. Good luck!

And in unrelated news...
I'm two revisions of Writing the Essay papers to being a college sophomore. Feels soooooo weird. But I'm definitely way excited for next year's schedule, it's the perfect schedule for me.

So, do I understand this correctly? Hayden has "triple suites" with three bedrooms with one person per room. Do you have any information of these types of rooms, or would it be better to just bite the bullet and get a normal double (I have never shared a room before so I see that as a last resort)?

NOCCA, i've heard a lot of NYU kids complain about Writing the Essay. What is it about it that's so bad? And would you recommend that we don't do WTE with Conwest in the same semester?

To rszanto:
I live in Hayden, and I can honestly tell you that there are no "triple suites" like the ones you're talking about. I know that there are a couple of random singles on the second and maybe third floors, but they're always in the same suite with either a double or a triple room. If you're in a Hayden suite, count on having either one or two roommates; the suites normally have five people, two people in one room, three in the other. Honestly, if you have the opportunity to choose (which I don't think you do, unless you request something), defs try to get a double; they're pretty spacious, and you're only sharing a bathroom with one person. The room view for doubles isn't good in most instances, but something has to be wrong, right? A double within a suite is also not bad; they can be the size of normal doubles, depending on the floor.

To ilovehouse:
I didn't have to take Con West--I know that Tisch Drama students don't have to take it and I don't think any of the BFA Tisch programs have to do it (Cinema Studies is a BA program, I think the only one in Tisch). So, I wouldn't know how to tell you about whether it's good to take Con West and Writing the Essay in the same semester, although I haven't heard any concerns about that. As far as Writing the Essay itself...I have my personal qualms about it, and personally I would have been fine with either taking one semester or taking an English Lit class or something (or getting that second semester replaced with my AP English Lit credit, ANYTHING). But no. Two semesters of Writing the Essay. My issues with it are that it's just a class of confusion; all these terms are thrown at you (I'll probably be making fun of "reckon" for a few more months), and you have no idea what the hell the teachers are talking about half the time. The only thing that I've really gotten out of class is A)learning how to BS with finesse and B)taking totally unrelated things and finding connections (actually something really good to take out of a class). But generally I could have definitely done without it, and the majority of freshmen that I've talked to feel that way...I've only talked to literally three people all year that actually enjoy the class. Not to discourage you before you've tried it (sorry about that, I probably already have). But yeah. One more essay due tomorrow (I'm actually working on it right now) and it's OVERRR. So happy.

P.S. Not sure what school you're in, but if you're in CAS, you're in luck...only one semester of WTE. If you're in Tisch, Stern, or Steinhardt, sorry...two semesters for you.

I have a couple of questions that you might be able to answer:

Do you have any idea how many transfer applicants the drama department at Tisch takes for directing?

I think my application is strong, but my test scores are low (24 ACT, please don't laugh) and around a 3.4 GPA (College and H.S.) but I did do the IB program in H.S. Anyways, do you think with strong essays, rec.s, e.c.s, and a good interview I could still be a strong canidate?

Final question I swear, I was told my admissions decision from Tisch was mailed May 2nd (I still haven't recieved here in Missouri). Do you think it is a good sign that it was mailed so early???
