Question: I am new on this discussion board thingy, but I just wanted some general questions answered. This seemed like a good place to start. Luckily I still have a year before I have to make the big decision. I was just wondering how the transition was to NYU and how you have liked Tisch and NYU in general. Tell me whatever you want, I am just researching right now and want to get insider opinions. Thanks :):) Your response would be very much appreciated!

Would you have any idea what the average SAT score for Tisch kids are? I know the average for all NYU kids is like 1350-1400

To mckayjm:
The transition was a little different, but NYU is still college. You won't have any problems being here if you're an open person. Sure there are more distractions here than in other places, but at the same time you'll be so engrossed in your studies that you'll be here a full semester and realize that you rarely leave Washington Square/Union Square area. Tisch and NYU are big schools, but at the same time there's so much division that your classes won't be big. Part of the reason why I chose Tisch is because I have the opportunity to study in the city, be in a big school, NOT be surrounded by sports and frats (if you like those things, you should probably be looking into other schools lol). Also, the BFA program has a significant academic component while still providing intense conservatory training, so I can actually pursue a double major, something that would have been impossible at all the other BFA programs that I was accepted to. A lot of people complain about red tape, but I've actually found everything very accessible; however, everyone has different experiences. The dorms are among the best in the country, although after a year here you'll forget that...but they are honestly the among the best dorms that you'll see compared to most other colleges, and in prime locations in the city--Washington Square, Union Square, Gramercy area. Ummm...that's about it so far, if you have any specific questions, look at the other parts of this thread or post another question!

To bimachris:
I'm not sure what the average SAT scores for Tisch students are, but in my experience they're a bit lower than the rest of the NYU schools. That's because about half of the admissions decision is also based upon talent, so SAT scores aren't quite important for Tisch as say, CAS or definitely Stern. However, you should still get a good score (I'd say to aim for about 1250 or higher if you can) just to make sure. Even though the SAT score isn't as important in a Tisch decision, it could make the difference between you and someone else with the same caliber audition, similar scores, etc. Good luck!

Yeah, that's what I was hoping for. I'm kinda on the lower half of NYU applicants academically (3.7 GPA, 1290 SAT) so I was hoping my film will win them over. :) I'm still going to retake the SATs though, wanna get into 1350s, lol.

You should still retake your SATs (since you have some time left, why not?), but even if you didn't, I'd still say you were good academically for Tisch. Just personal opinion, though :-).

Thanks, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside lol

NOCCA - you have been so helpful - thank you! I do have a question about Thanksgiving break. I am trying to look at flights for our daughter to come home and am wondering what time would she be able to catch a flight out of NYC? How do the students get back and forth from the airport - shuttle and cabs like everyone else? Also what about winter break - when do students leave for home then?
Thanks again!

Yay! Flights leave out at various times during the Thanksgiving and winter breaks. Depending on the time her classes end and begin again, she'll be able to leave and come back. The transportation to the airport varies. It's possible to get a cab to JFK and LaGuardia...I know that LaGuardia would cost around $40, and JFK might be more expensive since it's further. It's also possible to catch the subway directly to JFK, though inadvisable if she has large amounts of luggage/doesn't feel like dealing with luggage, though it is much cheaper to do this option...around $7 ($2 for the subway, $5 for the AirTrain. To LaGuardia, she would have to catch the subway to the nearest stop in Queens and catch a bus from there or catch a subway near City College in Harlem and catch a bus from there to LaGuardia. Cabs and subway preferences just varies by person; I've done both, depending on my mood and my finances at the time, haha. Normally classes end one or two days before Thanksgiving day (from my memory of last year). The day to leave for winter break varies; a lot of Tisch students can leave earlier because they generally finish any final exams a week or a week and a half before everyone else. However, I wouldn't book tickets for winter break right now, you should wait until later for your D to know her schedule of classes and final exams. NYU sets the Thanksgiving recess this year to begin on Thursday, November 27 and for it to continue throughout that weekend, and the winter recess begins on December 20 (though it's a good possibility that she'll be finished with exams way before that, depending on her school, major, and exam schedule).
Quick question, I was wondering what the difference is between collegiate seminars and freshman honors seminars?

If you haven't already looked at this site, you should check out the descriptions of both the Collegiate and Freshman Honors seminars here:NYU > A & S > Honors Programs

From what I read, the only differences are that the Collegiate Seminars have a mentor (in the form of a professor) that's supposed to be with you throughout all your undergraduate years at NYU, and the classes for the two sections are also different. That's about all the information I can give you on it though, as I don't know all that much on CAS Honors Programs (I only knew people who were in Steinhardt Honors).

My D has been admitted as Tisch drama major for fall 2008. We looking over her class registration information. There is no indication of the buildings where the classes meet. Since she will only be taking two classes other than studio (Writing the Essay and Theater Production), is it safe to assume that you can make it from any building where a Tisch essay or theater production class would be held to another building in the 15 minutes between classes?

She'll have ITP's Theatre History lecture component on Mondays, and it's in the Cantor Film Center, on 8th St. and University Place. For the ITP seminar component on Wednesdays, I'm pretty sure all of them are in the Tisch building on 721 Broadway. Writing the Essay classes are most of the time in Bobst Library or Goddard Hall, both Washington Square locations that are very close to one another. So the answer to your question is that, yes, she'll be able to make it just fine in 15 minutes between classes. It would be best not to stall for a long time, but no rush is needed; Cantor, the Tisch building, and Washington Square are all within 5-10 minutes walking distance from one another.

NOCCA, do you know anything about the Outreach program?
(Is it actually fun or a waste of time?)

Eh, I actually didn't do it and I don't know anyone else who's done it. I actually haven't even heard it mentioned since last August to be honest, lol. I did seriously consider doing it last year, but because I had to get help moving in from New Orleans (and a number of other factors) it wasn't possible. It seems fun though! You should check it out, especially since it gives you a chance to skip dreaded freshman move-in day...lines are sooo long most of the time, especially at dorms (like Hayden) where there's limited elevators. For more info, including schedule, go to this site OutReach - Office of Student Activities . NYU. You can probably better assess it from there and see if you like it. Good luck!

What's the best time for move in day (morning, noon, night) on the 24th?

Definitely nighttime, preferably as late as possible. Everyone tries to move in really early (especially the middle of the day) because everyone is so excited and anxious. If you go at night, you won't have as much trouble with parking, and moving in is like 2 hours shorter lol. Just saying.

lol do you know anything about stern???

Thanks alot for replying man!

I told myself I wouldn't do anymore "chances" posts lol...

But I will tell you that your course load looks good, especially Calculus BC and AP Statistics. Stern likes to see math, so if you do well in those classes, it's really great for Stern.

NYU actually has need-blind admissions, so your need for financial aid will not impact the decision at all, for both regular and early decision. Even if you don't have need, it's still good for merit based scholarships (which are slowly being phased out, so get them while you can!).

I think that your test scores and GPA are Stern range. You probably already knew that, though :-).

Overall, I would say to get in a really good essay, and you have a really good shot for Stern. I can't say for sure, because Stern is becoming way more competitive these days, but your credentials, course load, GPA/ACT scores look good. As long as you have a good essay that shows how different you are, you have a really good shot.

NOCCA Jr, hope you are keeping cool in NYC! It's about 100 degrees where I am (considerably south of you), but man! It's warm!

Anyhow, hoping you might have some info/opinions to share on which kind of laptop computer a musical theater major might get, and what accessories, programs, etc. are best.

I am guessing my daughter's inclination to get a Macbook is correct, but am wondering if she needs Garageband or another program that allows her to record music so she can record her voice lessons, etc. (Can you tell I have no idea what I am talking about? <g> I basically just want to know what programs are best for MTs.)</g>

Thanks in advance.

Ehhh...I hate the mugginess here! I don't like heat in any form (mild weather is always best, but I much prefer winter over summer, because you can layer and the look is just better, I think haha). I thought I'd escape New Orleans weather if I were here for the summer...sadly, I'm quite mistaken lol.

But anyways, in my opinion, MacBooks are a little better because they have piano and Garage Band functions. But I mean if you want to save a couple hundred bucks, a PC is just fine...it's not like she's going to have to do crazy film/music stuff (those functions would be good to practice music theory and maybe to punch out a few notes for sheet music, but she might much prefer a real piano, which are readily available on campus). She needs a computer essentially for basic writing (particularly for her Writing the Essay classes).

Just as a heads-up, the majority of people on this campus, in my experience, either have Macs or will get one...but a lot of it is because of the fact that they're "in" and chic, though they are useful for various functions, including the music things mentioned earlier. A lot of Cappers got through last year without one and were perfectly fine. It's really just personal preference!
