Tisch freshman willing to answer questions

hi! would you mind chancing me??

sat: 1760 (crap, i know)
act: 27
gpa uw: 3.6

-school doesn't rank
-won best actress at regional uil competition
-won all star cast at district uil competition
-won best singing performance at a city talent show
-have about 10 productions under my belt, most of them lead

im applying ED to tisch drama
and im also hispanic if that helps...?

-great, great recs
-kickass essays
-planning to take the sat and act again, hoping to get above a 2000 and above a 31, respectively

sorry, forgot to mention:
-3 in us history
-4 in world history
-4 in ap english lang.
-4 in ap english lit.

oh and im also taking sat IIs for spanish and literature

i'm a freshman at a public college in new york (Baruch College if anyone heard of it) and im hoping to transfer to stern 2009 as a sophomore ...

I checked the forums at NYU and i read somewhere saying that it's good to take financial and managerial acct, which isnt offered to us freshmen until our sophomore year. but i'm taking calculus, microecon, writing and other classes (16 credits semester), would that suffice?

1)Is it harder to get into NYU if i come from a public college in NY?

2)If I don't apply for financial aid, would that increase my chances of getting in?

3)does the transfer application stay the same ? because i'm looking at it right now and its the same exact one as last year when i applied..

4)also does nyu accept transfers on a rolling admissions basis?

thx man

To Bondgirl:
Please read the other threads on this forum for your answer. I'm going to wind up typing the same thing for probably the 100th time (literally) haha. But, in short, you can't really chance someone for Tisch because of the whole audition thing...just do your best.

To asd:
I'm not sure what college courses would look good for a Stern transfer student (Sternie schedules confuse me haha). However,
1) I know people that have transferred from all over the place, community colleges, big name schools, etc. You have just as much of a shot as anyone else. Stern, I know, really highly values a high GPA though. Just saying.

2) Since NYU is a need-blind (that's the right term, I think) school, whether or not you apply for financial aid really doesn't make a difference in the admissions process.

3) If the new application is the exact same one from last year (and not just a link to the old one that you filled out last year)...well, you're in luck, aren't you lol? Just make sure that it says 2009-2010 application, and you've got nothing to worry about.

4) Transfers apply at a specific time (the deadline being a little after freshman regular decision students submit their applications) and receive a decision in like April or May, so it is not rolling admissions.

Hope that helps!

hey, im appyling to Tisch early decision.. i was wondering what you did for your audition. I'm having a lot of trouble finding audition pieces/monlogues.

Hi, NOCCA Jr. Just wanted to say I was happy to hear that you and my D have met and I think are in the same dance classes. Is that correct? Sorry it didn't work out for her to buy your books. We talked about it after I discussed it with you here, and then in the chaos and confusion of move in, we forgot. :)

NOCCA, I appreciate your effort on this thread.

I'm applying Gallatin ED for fall 09. I have also heard what you said: a lot of weight is put on your essays and what you can contribute to the environment at the school.

I plan on concentrating on a media design and digital arts type thing...I plan on someday working as an art director for a magazine in the city, and eventually start my own publication. Do you think I would stand a good chance in admissions? I honestly don't see a better place for me to study than Gallatin.

Female, Hispanic
GPA: 3.73 unweighted
Class Rank: 33 out of 284 (bad because i moved to a new state in January)
SAT: 650-reading, 660-math, 640-writing (bad...I'm just not too fond of the SAT and it's 10 sections)
ACT: 32 (I also just took this September 13th, and I feel like I did better than a 32 this time)
SAT II: taking physics, lit, and math I on October 4th.
EC: Yearbook 3 years, head design editor as a senior; student government freshman year, and junior and senior year, I'm the student council publicity officer this year and I'll probably be setting up a web page and be working on some more design stuff; golf 4 years (varsity for 3 years), captain senior year; I have had 4 different jobs since sophomore year, about 15 hours a week; just landed a photo internship with a local magazine; basically, I take a lot of pictures and I absolutely LOVE communications design.

Pre-AP/Honors classes: English I, English II, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Physics (1 semester).
AP classes: English III, English IIII, Physics B, Computer Science, World History (1 semester), European History, Statistics.

Hey NMR...we did finally meet and we are in all of the same dance classes haha. Loves it.

Rlstine, based on the information here, you seem to have a very good shot. Go to the NYU website to find out facts about average GPA and test scores. From what I've heard about Gallatin, they also put a lot of weight on your essay and what you actually intend to focus on...and, most importantly, why.

Mind chancing me? ^^;

I think I'll be applying to CAS for fall '09, early action (if they even have that...I'll be applying Cornell (long-shot) ED, so I don't know if I can still apply here EA.) or regular depending on what happens.

SAT: 1950 (1310/1600) (taking again in October - aiming for 2050+)
GPA: 3.7 Unweighted
Rank: School doesn't rank (probably top 15%)
SAT II: Biology 570 (sophomore) - taking Math 1C and one other one this November
EC: Biology Club 3 years, Anime Club 2 years, Math League 2 years, Key Club 1 year; Volunteered at nursing home (50+ hours), volunteered at YMCA (100+ hours), soup kitchen, school Dean's aid, also spent 2 summers ago at Columbia University summer program for 7 weeks.
Classes: 1 honors as frosh, 2 honors as sophomore, 4 honors as junior, 1 honors and 2 AP now (school doesn't offer too many APs for anyone under a senior. Maybe just 1 or 2)

Excellent LORs, and I'm currently working on that essay. Kind of stuck on that essay though. I'm going for a Biology major (pre-med), so should I write about something like that? Any suggestions for the essay would be greatly appreciated;;

Thanks!

celestial, we have the exact same SAT score! and unfortunately, NYU doesn't have an early action plan...

rstlne33: xDD woah that's cool.
A lot of people in my school last year got into NYU with 1900s on their SAT, so that's only a part of my worries.
Let's hope we both get in :D

Oh seriously...? That sucks. Guess I'll have to apply regular..
but then that's 4 less supplement questions I have to worry about xD

Hi, NOCCA,
Your efforts on this thread are nothing less than heroic. I salute you!

A question for you on behalf of my d: can you comment on the Tisch school's program for someone wishing to go into theatre management? My d wishes to run a theatre company, not perform in it. So, how are auditions handled in that case? Or are they? I mainly ask because she's trying to "chance" herself, but with the auditions wildcard she's not sure how to proceed.

p.s., she'd write this herself but she is Asia working for a huge entertainment company during her gap year and doesn't alway have reliable internet in China.

NOCCA Junior,

My question can be answered from your experience being at NYUY and talking to other Tisch students. Everything I read here says NYU/Tisch only takes top of the class- top GPA's, Sat's. ranking, etc..
But are there any exceptions? Have you run into someone who was not the top-top and still got in? Someone who does not fit the profile and does not have the excellent rankings we see all over this board?

NOCCA I'm a Junior in high school and I'm applying to the Film Summer program with Tisch pretty soon. Can you give me some insights to better my chances for the summer high school program?

j.m.j. -
My dd went to summer Photo progrm at Tisch. I remember hearing that the personal statement you write should show your passion for film - not so much just relisting your accomplishments that are on your creative resume or transcripts. At least that is what dd did.

It was a great program - wonderful experience and she still is in contact with her instructors. In fact, she is applying ED for fall 09.

Good luck to you!

I really displayed my passion in my statement but I would like to know if there is a little more to give my application a little more shine. And do you know how the scholarships work? Did she get a full ride?

My daughter really wanted to go to Tisch, got in on nearly a full scholarship, and basically hated it her first year. I was floored - as was she - as she was SO into it beforehand. It turned out she just couldn't connect with ANY of the students and basically spiraled down. She hated the Tisch approach of being very 'harsh' and overly critical of the acting attempts - she does not respond well to constant negatives. Nor does she respond well to: This is how you have to learn to act, and there is no other way. And before you say, "Well, she'll need to learn to deal with all that in the 'real world,'" I can tell you that I myself have acted professionally and also I have my MFA and NO, NOT all acting is a constant stream of 'you suck, you need to try harder, oh, well maybe that was ok, do more of that, no, you suck.' Many theatre companies are supportive. Yes, not Broadway, which is notoriously competitive, but plenty of other places are supportive and take a FAR more nurturing, expansive approach. Anyway, Tisch set her back very seriously, and she is now in a different major and won't act at all. So Tisch is NOT FOR EVERYONE! Please, please do your homework beforehand and don't set yourself up like my daughter. I'll bet she could have found all this out if she'd really talked to current students (not just people who 'love' Tisch). She recommends talking to the kids who are smoking outside. :-)

j.m.j.
If you showed your passion - that is all I know for you to do on yur statemtn. Applications are not due for several months, posisbly there is some activity you can do between now and then that woudl spice up your creative resume? I am a dirm believer that you do all that you can do and then you leave it be. What will happen will happen. My dd was waitlisted and we were so disppointed. A week later she received another email that said, "Come".

Don't know anything about scholarships for the hs summer program - we paid.

raphael - I thought you also have a S at Tisch, no? (from posts last year on the MT thread)? Is he still there? Also, what studio was your D in and did she contemplate switching methods? Would love to learn a little more. Sorry to hear that she had such trouble making friends.

I think your post does highlight something people often times overlook, NYU has so much too offer, but one does need to be able to navigate through it all. My own kid is as happy as she could possibly be (well, perhaps she would love to figure out a way to squeeze even more in), but I can totally understand that it is not necessarily the right place for everyone.
