We couldn't make the event this weekend. Any helpful tidbits, impressions, feedback? Would especially appreciate hearing from any prospective Tisch designers :-).

Lightingmom - I’ve been lurking on CC for about 8 months, but never got around to creating a profile until I saw your question today. My D will be attending this fall for Design & Tech. Right now she’s planning on focusing on lighting and probably sound, but we will see where things go.

So to answer your question about Weekend on the Square. We did attend. It was mainly geared to students who had not yet decided, so much of it seemed very “rah rah”, but it was fun. The first session of the day was for all schools and was very general. The Tisch session was more interesting.

For the Tisch session they had a general session for all students and parents, then they separated the students out by department. All Theater Drama students left together, including the design and tech studio. My D did not enjoy this part since the student part was very much geared towards the actors and she couldn’t find any other techies in the group. While she was off doing vocal warm-ups and movement, the parents had a panel where we could ask questions about life at NYU, how check in works, etc. The parents asked really good questions, and the info was great.

Afterwards we got back with our students and met some of the studio teachers for questions and answers. Then we broke up by studio, and there were two other design and techies in the group! Chris J. is on sabbatical, so the woman who is covering for him was there instead. (I feel horrible, but I don’t remember her name. Possibly Mary Louise Geiger? She does lighting), as well as John Dunkle. There were also four students. Everyone seemed very nice. The kids mentioned that they had recently toured a company that is a major set designer and manufacturer, and had also recently seen a show.

For my D, the true highlight of the day was later, when we got to see what dorm rooms looked like at Hayden and 3rd North. :-)

I know this is a real high level overview. If you have any specific questions ask away and I will try to answer!

^^ BigCityLight- thanks so much! This was actually super helpful. Not sure my kid would’ve been too thrilled about vocal warm-ups, lol! Did they mention when Chris J would be back? Glad to make contact with another tech parent! Once you have the magic 14 posts we can PM :-).

I’m not sure when Chris is back. I didn’t realize he was out as my D had emailed him last month and he responded!

15 posts needed, huh? Guess I need to get to work!

My D will be going to NYU Tisch for Film and TV-FTV. We’re going to Admitted Student day on the 27th-couldn’t go to WOSquare. What was your impression about the new roommate policy-diversity focused?

The new policy was briefly mentioned in regards to not being able to request a specific roommate, but it didn’t seem to be causing any significant angst from what I heard. And it doesn’t phase my D one bit. I think she’s looking forward to meeting new people!

One piece of advice they did give was that when your S or D receives their housing assignment, do not judge the roommate based on his/her Facebook. That seemed very sensible.

Let me know if they mention how the new policy will work during your session. They really didn’t get into the particulars at WOSquare.
