My daughter is a 4.2 student, president of many school clubs, has taken piano for 8 years…has performed in every highschool play generally the lead role. sings like an angel. BUT…she has never had professional dance instruction. She’s a great dancer and learns quickly. She wants to apply to NYU (Tisch). But is worried she is beginning too late to prepare for the audition process. What do you think her chances are to be accepted into Tisch. I have no doubt she will be admitted to NYU. Is there anything we can do to kick up her chances for the audition? Thank you!

@monalynn, Dance classes in Tisch’s MT studio (New Studio on Broadway) are leveled. Skill levels will range from people like your daughter to highly trained dancers. She would have some peers just like her if she attends Tisch so don’t sweat that especially because you can’t solve it now anyway. Iif she does have time to take a dance class now, it could help if you have to learn a dance combination in an audition.

Writing thoughtful essays and continuing her solid academic performance as well as careful preparation of her audition material will mean she is in the mix. That is certainly a better strategy than ignoring those areas. Beyond that, nobody here will “chance her” because we cannot. The only thing I can think of that she can do to “kick up her chances” is to turn her application material in by the application deadline because failing do so means her chances are zero.

She should consider whether or not she is open to assignment to any studio for primary training (primary studio is the first two years and after that you can switch) not just the MT studio. There is only one MT studio at Tisch but there are a number of excellent acting studios - some of which have quite a bit of music and dance in their coursework. Mathematically your odds of getting into Tisch are better if you are competing for more seats. The application asks about studio preference but if you are applying for MT, will also ask if you are open to placement in the other studios. My daughter is in the MT studio, but she checked “yes” on that question because she was open to alternate placements.

Good luck!
