Still take music/dance if not in MT?

Hi! I was wondering, if one was accepted into the NYU drama department but not in the musical theatre program and placed in one of their other acting studios, what options do they have as far as taking voice or dance classes anyway? Thanks!

I know you can take private voice for non-vocal performance majors through Steinhard for elective credit.

@heyitsemily, WTXMom is right about private voice through Steinhardt. You can use some of your leftover elective credits for that training. But as far as additional dance goes, there are not as many options. (At least I don’t think so but I didn’t ask since my daughter was an MT.) But it any event, it is far less expensive to take additional dance outside of NYU than pay for credits to take it at NYU. There are many dance studios in NYC that offer classes in all forms of dance on a drop in or sign up basis. The real challenge is fitting it all in with an already jam packed studio schedule.

There are open arts dance classes that anyone can take! I know voice is offered in the summer sessions as well for credit.

^^^yes @princessjpmom but if I’m not mistaken (and please correct me if I’m wrong), didn’t your daughter have an experience where the access to dance when not a Tisch MT major was a concern?

My friend’s son is in his 2nd year at Atlantic studio. He loves Atlantic and I think by reputation Atlantic has more MT training that some of the other acting studios. I saw him this summer and he did express that the one area that he felt he needed more of was dance and that he felt it was better to go outside for it. Not sure if that was because it was cheaper or easier to schedule.
