It's that time of the year again... so far I've met 6 or 7 pre-frosh in the last three weeks alone. Here are a couple of tips I've compiled over that time:

1) Respect your hosts' academic lives. Hosting takes up more attention than you think, since we're all pretty much on edge to give you the best experience Yale has to offer. But at the same time, we are at college. So if we pawn you off to one of our friends so we can go study for the history midterm the next day, don't get ****ed off.

2) We trust you as adults. The college experience usually involves alcohol, and when we take you to parties or just offer you something in the room, we expect that you know your limits.

3) As an addendum to the last tip, don't drink up all our alcohol. That's just abusing the privilege.

4) When you go somewhere with a friend, please tell us who you're going with. It sounds very kindergartenish, but while you're here we feel pretty responsible for you, so it'll take a lot off our minds if you just let us know.

5) That being said, please don't walk around New Haven at 3 o'clock in the morning by yourself.

6) Tell us about yourself and your college search. If you don't say anything, we don't have any idea of what you want to know about our college.

7) Don't hesitate to ask us questions, especially about the college admissions process. We've all been through the cycle before.

8) Bring some cash on college visits, in case they don't offer you meal cards and you have to purchase your lunches or dinners.

9) Keep in mind that we're not totally representative of Yale. Usually we're good at giving you as broad a picture as we can, but do realize that there's a lot of people on campus and therefore a lot of different groups. If you don't click with us, don't let that be a total deterrent to applying. Instead, focus your attention on the overall social and academic aspect.

10) Lastly, don't spend all your time on the Internet or on the cell phone. That's just unproductive for both you and us.
